Pokemon Trading Card Game fans have a lot to look forward to! The next big expansion, Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution – Chaos Rising, arrives on May 22nd, introducing powerful new cards like Mega Greninja and Mega Pyroar. And there’s more coming this summer! The Pokemon Company has just announced the English version of the Mega Evolution – Pitch Black expansion, launching in July and adding even more Mega ex cards to the game.
The next expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, following the May release of Chaos Rising, is coming soon. This new set will highlight Mega Pokémon, particularly those introduced in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Called Pitch Black, it arrives in the U.S. on July 17th and will introduce Mega Darkrai ex to the game, along with other new Mega ex Pokémon from Legends: Z-A. Here’s a look at what we know about it so far.
Pitch Black Sets July Release Date, With Early Preview for Play! Pokemon Attendees
Okay, so the new Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution – Pitch Black set is dropping on July 17th! I’m already planning my trip to the store. They’re releasing a new Elite Trainer Box, and of course, a bunch of booster packs. They’re also hinting at some other cool collections we don’t know about yet. The big draw for the Elite Trainer Box is definitely Mega Darkrai – the design looks awesome! Here’s what else is cool about this release:
- 6 Mega Evolution ex cards
- 4 additional Pokemon ex cards
- 11 illustration rares
- 18 ultra rares
- 6 special illustration rares
This upcoming set is expected to be similar in size to previous expansions like Perfect Order, and will closely reflect the Japanese Abyss Eye release. The highlight for many players and collectors will be the new ‘ex’ cards featuring Mega Darkrai, Mega Zeraora, Mega Chandelure, and Mega Excadril, all coming from the Mega Dimension DLC of Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Based on the quality of artwork in recent Mega Evolution sets, we can also anticipate some beautifully illustrated rare cards to collect.
Want to be among the first to play with the new cards? Pre-release Play! Pokemon tournaments are starting July 4th at local game stores. These events let you try out the cards before anyone else. You can find a tournament near you using the Play! Pokemon event finder.
Upcoming Pokemon TCG Release Schedule
Now that we know the latest release dates, here’s a look at the upcoming English Pokémon Trading Card Game releases for the next few months. Here’s the confirmed schedule as of April 30th:
- Mega Evolution – Chaos Rising: May 22nd
- Mega Evolution – Pitch Black: July 17th
- Pokemon TCG 30th Anniversary Collection: September 16th in Japan, with worldwide release still TBD
Currently, these are the main sets we’re aware of. We expect to learn more about future releases as new sets become available in Japan.
