Police may be closing in on finally finding Kristin Smart after 30 years.
Kristin Smart, a 19-year-old California college student who disappeared in 1996, was legally declared dead in 2002. However, it wasn’t until 2022 that Paul Flores was convicted of her murder by a jury.
Investigators now think they’ve discovered human remains on a property owned by Paul Flores’ mother, Susan Flores, in Arroyo Grande, California. Sheriff Ian Parkinson announced in a press conference on May 8th that soil tests indicated the presence of human remains, either currently or previously, on the property.
He explained to reporters that tests suggest human remains were either previously present at the location or may still be there. He clarified that the evidence comes from soil analysis, specifically compounds found in the soil that are associated with a decomposing human body.
Authorities have not determined if the remains may have belonged to Kristin.
The sheriff stated that, unfortunately, Kristin hasn’t been found yet, but the search continues with no set end date.
Prosecutors allege that Paul killed Kristin on May 25, 1996, while attempting to sexually assault her. At the time, she was a student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Paul’s father, Ruben Flores, was accused of assisting in burying the teenager’s body in his backyard. However, investigators believe the remains were moved after that initial burial. During a 2021 search, prosecutors reported finding evidence of human blood and an area of disturbed soil roughly the size of a coffin, as reported by NBC News.
In 2022, Ruben was acquitted of charges related to Kristin’s murder. His lawyer had previously asked the public to remember that Ruben was presumed innocent until proven guilty.

At the trial, Deputy District Attorney Christopher Peuvrelle of San Luis Obispo County said he hoped to finally bring Kristin’s family some peace, despite the fact that her remains were never recovered.
Crimes committed behind closed doors often leave no witnesses. However, using technology like ground-penetrating radar, along with the expertise of a forensic archeologist and lab supervisor, we’ve been able to reveal what Kristin couldn’t. Though we haven’t recovered a complete body, we did find her blood – just a few grains of sand stained with it. That’s all the Smart family has left of their daughter.
I’ve been following Paul’s case for a long time, and it breaks my heart to share that he’s currently serving a sentence of 25 years to life. Just recently, in January, the California Supreme Court unfortunately denied his petition for review, which was a real blow to any hope for a second look at his case. It’s incredibly discouraging.

That means, legally speaking, he was never proven guilty, and the question of who did commit those terrible crimes remains unanswered to this day. It’s a truly haunting case, and the mystery continues.

Several more deaths followed in copycat incidents, and the perpetrator of these crimes has never been identified.

The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer active in Northern California from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, and his true identity is still a mystery. Only one of these codes has been successfully deciphered.
