Few sci-fi shows from the 21st century have captured hearts quite like Firefly. Though Joss Whedon’s space western was cancelled after just one season in 2002, it’s remained incredibly popular with fans – so much so that a new animated series is being made. And that’s not the only way the story continues! A feature film is now available to watch exclusively on Prime Video.
Released in 2005, the movie Serenity continues the story of Firefly, starting right after the series finale. While fans and critics enjoyed it, the movie didn’t do very well in theaters. Even so, it’s remained a fan favorite and a comforting re-watch, just like the original series.
Serenity Is Perfect Viewing While We Wait for the New Firefly
The movie Serenity has been available on Prime Video for a while, but starting May 1st, it became exclusively available there. It’s essential viewing before the upcoming revival. Serenity successfully finishes the story begun by the Firefly series, picking up loose ends and delivering a complete and satisfying narrative. The film follows the crew of the Serenity as they uncover a secret that could threaten the ruling Alliance. It’s packed with exciting action, but also features a surprisingly emotional and heartfelt story. Even if you’re new to Firefly or not a dedicated fan, you’ll appreciate the film’s strong story and excellent performances. Simply put, it’s a very well-made movie.
The film’s villain, The Operative (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor), is a standout character. He’s genuinely frightening, but also complex and driven by a strong personal code, making him a surprisingly compelling antagonist. This adds a lot to the movie’s quality and provides satisfying closure to the original Firefly series. It’s highly recommended to watch Serenity before the upcoming revival, both to refresh your memory of the world and to fully appreciate the villain’s impactful story.
