It’s hard to imagine a franchise more perfect for LEGO than . The world of Middle-earth, with its iconic locations and epic battles, seems tailor-made to be rebuilt with LEGO bricks.
Like all LEGO themes, the Lord of the Rings collection includes both small, quick-to-build sets perfect for a desk and larger, more involved builds. What could be a better way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Peter Jackson’s films than by recreating your favorite moments from the trilogy – perhaps even while watching the movies?
Gandalf Orchestrates a Chaotic Dinner at Bag End
I remember being so excited when the “An Unexpected Journey” set (number 79003) came out in 2012! It’s one of my favorites because it perfectly captures that iconic dinner scene where Bilbo’s peaceful life is completely turned upside down by Gandalf and the dwarves showing up at his door.
As a movie buff, I always loved this LEGO set – it’s sadly retired now, but it was a perfect size with 652 pieces. But honestly, it wasn’t just the size, it was how much detail they packed into it and the overall character. It came with minifigs of Bilbo in his comfy Shire clothes, Gandalf the Grey, and four of the dwarves – Balin, Dwalin, Bombur, and Bofur – each with their own weapons, which was a fantastic touch!
The “An Unexpected Gathering” set appears to be only the exterior of Bag End – including the fence, round windows and doors, and leafy tree design – but it opens up! The roof comes off, revealing the cozy interior of the Hobbit hole, complete with Bilbo’s table, three maps of Middle-earth, and a feast of goblets, plates, and food.
Sauron’s Forces Believe Reinforcements are Coming, But All is Not What it Seems
The biggest battle of the War of the Ring happened on the Pelennor Fields, the plains between the city of Minas Tirith and the River Anduin. A key moment occurred when the people of Minas Tirith saw a fleet of Corsair ships approaching, only to discover Aragorn and his army of the dead had taken control of them.
The “Pirate Ship Ambush” set (number 79008) is a large, impressive Corsair ship built from 652 pieces. It includes nine mini-figures: Aragorn, Legolas, Greenleaf, Gimli, two Orcs, the King of the Dead, two Soldiers of the Dead, and a pirate from Umbar. The set also comes with a variety of weapons like swords, crossbows, spears, axes, a longbow, and a quiver with arrows.
As a LEGO fan, I have to say this 2013 set is a blast! It’s got a working Orc catapult, which is awesome, and the back of the ship actually opens up to reveal a little dungeon – perfect for imprisoning the Umbar pirate. It’s a fairly substantial build, though, with some larger hull pieces and those impressive big sails, so you’ll definitely need some shelf space to display it!
The Epic Journey Through the Mines of Moria Turns Out to be Double the Fun
The Fellowship faces a terrifying escape from the Mines of Moria, hunted by orcs and a massive cave troll. This thrilling sequence is also famously recreated in one of the first LEGO sets based on The Lord of the Rings.
The 776-piece set, released in 2012, was available for only a year and a half before being retired. Builders create the Mines of Moria, complete with a wall that hides a secret treasure room. The set includes minifigures of Pippin, Boromir, Gimli, Legolas, two orcs, a cave troll, and two skeletons, making it a very popular LEGO set among fans.
Bring Character to Your Bookshelf with The Balrog Book Nook LEGO Set
I was so excited when LEGO started making these amazing ‘book nook’ sets in 2025! They’re designed for adults and are meant to sit right on your bookshelf, blending in with your books. They’ve released sets based on some of my favorite stories, like Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, and The Lord of the Rings. The Lord of the Rings one is especially cool because it creates a little scene from Middle-earth that you see whenever you grab a book!
This LEGO set recreates the epic showdown between Gandalf and the Balrog, complete with a fiery backdrop – which is why it has a lot of pieces. Though it’s built from 1201 pieces, it’s a manageable size, but still full of intricate details for both the Balrog and the collapsing stone surroundings.
Helm’s Deep Becomes the Ultimate Last Stand… Until the Wall Breaks
This is a classic, now-retired LEGO set (#9474) based on The Lord of the Rings. It recreates the intense battle at the Hornburg from The Two Towers, where the forces of men and elves fight against the attacking Uruk-hai army.
Released in 2012, “The Battle of Helm’s Deep” LEGO set was considered the best of its year. It featured an incredibly detailed fortress with walls, a tower including a signaling horn, ladders, a catapult, and even a section of wall that could be dramatically destroyed. While newer, larger sets have been released since then, this 1368-piece set felt enormous at the time and still offers a remarkably complete depiction of the iconic battle. The set included minifigures of Aragorn, Gimli, Haldir, King Theoden, a Berserker Uruk-hai, and another Uruk-hai warrior.
Celebrate Bilbo Baggins’ Eleventy-first Birthday
The latest addition to the LEGO Icons series is set #10354, “The Shire,” released in 2025. It builds on the original Bag End set to recreate Bilbo’s charming hobbit hole and capture the
Containing over 2000 LEGO pieces, “The Shire” is a detailed and impressive recreation of Hobbiton. It lets you explore Bag End, starting with Bilbo’s iconic round door and continuing through his hall, study, and parlor. The set also captures the lively atmosphere of a party with celebrations taking place amongst the rolling green hills and the famous party tree. This LEGO set is intended for adult collectors.
The Original “Ultimate Collector Series” Set
Before LEGO released larger sets, the Tower of Orthanc (set #10237) was the most impressive Lord of the Rings set available. At 28 inches tall, it was the first to truly capture the height seen in the films and became the centerpiece of many LEGO Middle-earth collections.
This impressive 2,359-piece set lets you build Isengard, the formidable tower from the movies. It features six detailed floors, including an attic, library, alchemy chamber, throne room, entrance hall, and dungeon. The set also includes a brick-built Ent and minifigures of an Uruk-hai and an Orc Pitmaster.
The Eye of Sauron Never Stops Watching
If you were amazed by the LEGO Tower of Orthanc, you’ll be even more impressed with Barad-dur (set #10333)! It’s one of the biggest LEGO Lord of the Rings sets ever created, containing 5471 pieces. Standing over 3 feet tall, it’s nearly five inches taller than the Orthanc model.
This set is dominated by the watchful Eye of Sauron. It includes detailed locations like Gollum’s lair, a weapons workshop, an Orc prison, a dining hall connected to a throne room, the study of the Mouth of Sauron, a tower library, and the Black Gate – which opens and closes automatically.
The Barad-dur set includes 10 miniature figures, such as Sauron, the Mouth of Sauron, Gothmog, several Orcs, and Gollum. With its impressive size and collection of figures, this set is likely to become a prized possession for both LEGO and The Lord of the Rings fans.
The Gold Standard of Middle-earth
The Rivendell LEGO set (set #10316) is widely considered the best The Lord of the Rings LEGO set ever made. This impressive set, with over 6,100 pieces, beautifully recreates the Elven sanctuary of Rivendell, where the story of The Fellowship of the Ring begins, and is a truly stunning display piece.
The set is incredibly detailed and feels realistic thanks to its layered construction and advanced building techniques. Inspired by the Council of Elrond scene from The Lord of the Rings, it’s designed with removable parts and includes features like Elrond’s study, Frodo’s bedroom, and the broken shards of Narsil.
This set is wonderfully designed and includes more mini-figures than any other on this list. Most builders absolutely love it and highly recommend it.
The White City Reaches Its Ultimate Form
As a huge fan of both LEGO and Lord of the Rings, I’m absolutely thrilled about the upcoming “Minas Tirith” set (set #11377)! It’s launching June 4, 2026, and it’s a beast – over 8,278 pieces! It’s not just huge in size, but also in the sheer scope of what it represents from the story. This is easily one of the most ambitious LEGO sets they’ve ever tackled.
As a movie set, this is incredibly detailed! The city itself is constructed in layers, and the designers really nailed the look of the fortress it’s based on. You get a fantastic sense of the exterior city life, but then you can delve inside to explore everything from the throne room to hidden passages and defensive positions within the walls. And the figures? Wow. You get ten total, including Gandalf, Faramir, Denethor, Pippin, Aragorn in his King Elessar guise, Arwen, four Gondor soldiers, and even a Shadowfax figure. It’s a truly impressive collection that brings the world to life.
LEGO Insiders members can also enter a contest for a chance to win a trip to Hobbiton, complete with all the LEGO Icons The Lord of the Rings sets.
