Long breaks between seasons can often be annoying for viewers, but in this case, it appears the wait actually benefited the show.
The popular spy show Citadel is back with a new season! Fans seem to love the latest installment even more than the first, with an 84% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – a significant jump from Season 1’s 62%.
Citadel Season 2 Has a Strong Reception
Okay, so all seven episodes of Season 2 are finally out! I know a lot of us have been eagerly waiting, and while not everyone’s had time to watch them all yet – so the ratings might change a bit – the initial reactions are really what I’m paying attention to. When you wait this long for a new season, you naturally have pretty high hopes, and it’s good to see what those first impressions are!
Viewers loved the show’s exciting action sequences. One person commented that the second season was a significant improvement over the first, saying they hadn’t seen such a dramatic change in a TV series in a long time. Many also highlighted Stanley Tucci’s surprisingly good performance as an action hero.
There isn’t a critics’ score for Season 2 yet, as only four reviews have been published. Luckily, most are positive—Archi Sengupta from LeisureByte.com praised the season’s exciting action and better writing, though they noted it doesn’t fully break new ground with its spy-story themes. Sengupta stated that the season “raises the stakes with slick action and improved storytelling, yet its reliance on familiar spy tropes keeps it from becoming truly unforgettable.”
While some critics found the show’s tone a bit uneven, many others enjoyed its entertainment value and fast-paced action. Unfortunately, the first season only received a 51% approval rating from critics.
What Happens in Citadel Season 2?
This spy series features Richard Madden, known from Game of Thrones, Priyanka Chopra from Quantico, and Stanley Tucci of The Devil Wears Prada. The first season follows Mason Kane, Nadia Sinh, and Bernard Orlick as they try to recover their memories and figure out who they are after being attacked and having their pasts erased.
Okay, so Season 2 really throws our heroes right back into the thick of it. They’re not just fighting a threat this time, they’re building a whole team – a really interesting mix of new characters with some serious skills. It kicks off this massive, worldwide adventure to uncover a conspiracy that could change everything for humanity. Honestly, it’s packed with huge action sequences, some seriously shocking twists, and a much bigger cast of characters, which means you’re constantly guessing who you can actually trust. The tension is incredible – anyone could turn out to be an ally or an enemy!
The first season features returning cast members Lesley Manville and Ashleigh Cummings, and introduces Jack Reynor as Hutch, Matt Berry as Franke Sharpe, and Lina El Arabi as Celine. Merle Dandridge, Gabriel Leone, and Rayna Vallandingham also join the cast.
Currently, Citadel is performing very well, ranking second in both U.S. and worldwide viewership, just behind The Boys. This is good news for Amazon, considering Citadel was a significant investment. The first season cost more to produce than all but one other TV series ever made – only The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, also on Prime Video, was more expensive.
Citadel is streaming on Prime Video.
