Making a big, visually impressive science fiction movie like Project Hail Mary is expensive – it cost around $200 million to produce. Even though early reviews were very positive, there was some worry about whether it would succeed at the box office. These days, it’s tough to get people to go to the movies for films that aren’t part of a big franchise, though Sinners proved it’s possible. Luckily, those concerns about Project Hail Mary turned out to be unnecessary.
As a huge movie fan, I was blown away by the opening weekend numbers for Project Hail Mary! Deadline is reporting it made over $80.6 million domestically, which is way more than anyone predicted – they initially thought it would bring in around $50 million, then revised that to $63-65 million. It’s a massive win for Amazon, breaking the record previously held by Creed III. What’s even cooler is that it had the second-best opening weekend of any original movie ever, only behind Oppenheimer! Now, there are a few things to keep in mind – it doesn’t count movies that launched franchises later on, like Inside Out, or films based on already huge properties like Barbie. But still, it’s a fantastic sign that audiences are really embracing original stories.
As expected, Project Hail Mary had the biggest opening weekend of director duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s careers. For Ryan Gosling, it was the second-highest opening of his films, surpassed only by Barbie.
How Project Hail Mary Amazed at the Box Office

Even before it came out, Project Hail Mary was generating a lot of excitement. Starting last fall, people were calling it a masterpiece, and that buzz continued to build with excellent marketing and strong recommendations from early viewers. While some worried the trailers revealed too much, they successfully showcased both the film’s stunning visuals and the touching relationship between the characters Ryland Grace and Rocky. This created the impression that Project Hail Mary was a uniquely well-balanced film – funny, emotional, and visually impressive – and early reviews have largely confirmed that, with some even suggesting it’s a potential Oscar contender.
Amazon made a smart move by releasing Project Hail Mary in late March. Enough time had passed since the last big sci-fi hit, Avatar: Fire and Ash, that audiences were eager for another large-scale, visually impressive film. Plus, Project Hail Mary didn’t have much competition in theaters, allowing it to become the clear audience favorite. The other major new release this weekend, the horror sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, earned only $9.1 million domestically, showing how much excitement there was for Project Hail Mary.
With no major new releases next weekend, the film Project Hail Mary is expected to continue its successful start. It’ll likely remain the top choice at the box office until The Super Mario Bros. Movie comes out in early April, and even then, it should still appeal to many viewers, particularly older science fiction fans. Because critics and audiences are raving about the film, it’s predicted to stay popular for weeks to come as more people hear the positive buzz and decide to see it.
The strong opening of Project Hail Mary is great news for movie theaters and suggests a positive trend for the year ahead. 2026 isn’t just bringing sequels and installments in popular franchises like Toy Story 5 and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. We’re also seeing highly anticipated, large-scale films from visionary directors, designed for the best viewing experience – think movies like Disclosure Day, The Odyssey, and Dune: Part Three. Project Hail Mary‘s success shows that audiences are still eager to see these kinds of ambitious films on the big screen, and a combination of both franchise favorites and original hits would be fantastic for the movie industry.
