A PlayStation 1 game originally released in 2001 is getting a modern update and will be available on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch in 2026. This is the first time the game will be re-released. So far, those are the only confirmed platforms. There are currently no plans to release it on Xbox or PC. While a Nintendo Switch 2 version isn’t planned, the game will work on the new console through backward compatibility. A PlayStation 4 version also hasn’t been announced, even though the PS5 version will be available through the PlayStation Store.
The PlayStation 1 game we’re discussing is Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix, an action-adventure title released in 2001 by Kronos Digital Entertainment and published by Eidos Interactive. Kronos Digital Entertainment went out of business shortly after the game’s release, and Eidos Interactive was later bought by Square Enix. For those unfamiliar, Fear Effect 2 is a prequel to the original Fear Effect, which received a re-release on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch last year. It’s strange that the first game is available on those platforms, but not the sequel, particularly since Limited Run Games is handling the re-releases for both.
About the Game
I’m really excited about this! While we don’t know exactly what changes they’re making yet, I’m sure they’ll be polishing things up and adding some improvements. Just to be clear though, it’s not a full remake – it’s a port of the original PlayStation 1 game, which is still awesome in my book!
If you’re new to the series, the original game is an action-adventure title and serves as a backstory to Fear Effect. When it launched, it received a very positive score of 84 on Metacritic, making it one of the highest-rated PlayStation 1 games of 2001 – similar to how well the first Fear Effect was received. While the original game quickly got a sequel, Fear Effect 2: Double Helix didn’t see a follow-up for 17 years. In 2018, Fear Effect Sedna was released, but it was unfortunately considered one of the worst games of that year. Around the same time, a remake of the very first game was being developed, but it was ultimately cancelled in 2023.
The game lets you explore the backstories of characters from the first game – the mercenaries. You’ll learn more about Hana Tsu-Vachel, a skilled assassin; Royce Glas, an intelligence expert burdened by his past; and Jakob “Deke” Decourt, a ruthless killer driven by profit. A new character, Rain Qin, who is close to Hana, also joins the team.
Square Enix owns the rights to this property, but hasn’t actively developed it themselves, preferring to license it to others – and that’s what they’ve done in this case. We’d love to hear your thoughts, so please leave a comment or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
