
A popular PlayStation 2 game is back after 23 years with a complete remake, and fans can now try a free demo before the full game launches next week. This demo lets players experience the game firsthand before buying it. Unlike the original, which was only available on PS2, both the remake and the demo are available on multiple platforms – including Steam, Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, and Xbox Store. The demo is either available now or will be released later today, depending on your location.
Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo are releasing a remake of the classic horror game, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly. The original, released in 2003 for the PlayStation 2, is considered one of the scariest games ever made. The full remake comes out on March 12th for $49.99, but a free demo is available now for players who want to experience it early.
We’re not sure how long the demo will be available, but it allows players to experience the start of the game and carry their progress over to the full version when it releases. It’s currently unknown whether the demo will remain available indefinitely or be removed from digital stores after the game launches. As the remake isn’t planned for services like PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass, this is the only way to try it out for free.
If you’re new to the series, the original Fatal Frame II came out in 2003 as a follow-up to Fatal Frame, which debuted in 2001. Both games were initially released only for the PlayStation 2. For dedicated horror fans, the second game is a significant improvement over the first – while the original is good, the sequel is considered a classic. That’s why Koei Tecmo decided to remake the second game instead of the first.
Offering a free demo a week before release suggests the game is finished and the developers are confident in its quality. If you enjoy the demo and decide to buy the full game, you’ll receive some bonus items as a thank you for pre-ordering: white and black Cat Ears, a Spirit Charm, and original Crimson Butterfly accessories for both Mio and Mayu. These are special cosmetic items like outfits and charms.
