Sony’s upgraded PSSR 2 technology in the PS5 Pro delivers noticeably improved image quality compared to the previous version, and it does so more quickly.
So, as a gamer, I’ve learned that everything my console does – every image, sound, or bit of text on the screen – actually takes processing power and time. It’s not just magically appearing, you know? There’s a real cost to making it all happen.
Consider upscaling: it requires time to process the image, rebuild it, and then show it on your screen.
In a recent interview with Digital Foundry, Sony system architect Mark Cerny explained that the company’s aim with PSSR 2 was to improve upscaling speed compared to the first version. This improvement would enable a single, system-wide setting to enhance visuals in all compatible games.
And it reached its target with room to spare.
Cerny explained:
I wasn’t sure if we should add a feature allowing users to automatically update all titles that work with our current PSSR system to the new PSSR. The main concern was that the new version would need to be significantly faster to justify this automatic upgrade option.
We set out to improve performance, and we succeeded! The new PSSR is about 100 microseconds faster than before. This lets us offer a feature called ‘Enhance PSSR Image Quality’ which automatically upgrades all compatible games to use the faster version. With this enabled, you should experience very minor reductions in frame drops.
Digital Foundry’s testing backs up Cerny’s claims, using Monster Hunter Wilds as a case study. They found that enabling the new PSSR 2 feature didn’t impact performance, even while noticeably improving the game’s visual quality.
So, this is a remarkable achievement, then.
We didn’t quite catch all the technical details – Digital Foundry has a complete interview if you’re interested – but it’s amazing that PSSR 2 offers better graphics and runs faster.
As we’ve mentioned before, this is a positive sign for the PS6, which will build upon these concepts and continue to improve them.
