Some PlayStation 5 owners are asking for refunds for a newly released Xbox game. They’re experiencing major issues with the game on their PS5 consoles – specifically, it’s crashing frequently, sometimes every few minutes. While not every player is affected, the problem is happening on both standard PS5s and the PS5 Pro, though reports are less common on the Pro due to fewer people owning that version.
Last week, Starfield, the new space exploration RPG from Xbox and Bethesda, became available on PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro. Players seem to be enjoying it, as it currently has a 4.27 out of 5-star rating on the PlayStation Store. While some players are reporting problems on platforms like Reddit and X, these issues don’t appear to be widespread. Interestingly, a similar situation occurred with the PS3 launch of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. This suggests the problems are likely related to Bethesda’s development process rather than Xbox, especially since other Xbox games on PS5 have launched without any issues.
“It’s Unplayable”
A popular post on the Starfield Reddit page is claiming the game is currently “unplayable” on the PS5 due to frequent crashes.
A PlayStation 5 user reported frequent crashes while playing Starfield, stating the game is currently unplayable due to crashes happening every couple of minutes. They’ve tried troubleshooting without success, noting that other games work perfectly and this issue is exclusive to Starfield. The user believes a refund is warranted.
So, I’ve been reading the comments, and apparently, this isn’t just happening on the regular PS5 – a PS5 Pro user said they’re getting it too. It’s not a full crash to the home screen, but more like a complete freeze where the game just locks up and you have to force quit. They’re begging for a hotfix, and honestly, they’re not even surprised it’s happening. They’ve already submitted a ticket to support, which kinda says it all.
A player reported that the game frequently freezes and crashes on their PlayStation 5 Pro, both when building ships and scanning planets. They’ve experienced over 20 of these issues since the game launched, making it impossible to play.
Many players who have spent a lot of time with the game haven’t experienced any problems, but this issue seems significant. If enough players request refunds, PlayStation might start automatically approving them. As of now, neither PlayStation, Xbox, nor Bethesda has officially addressed the situation.
Like with Skyrim on the PS3, Starfield on PS5 is experiencing problems that Bethesda may take a long time to resolve – and some might never be fully fixed. If you’re having trouble with the game, you might want to consider getting a refund instead of waiting for a solution.
