The eighth season of “Rick and Morty” has delved into uncharted grounds for the beloved Adult Swim series. Grandpa Rick, in his usual antics, concocted a world reminiscent of “The Matrix” as a form of punishment for his grandkids. Jerry, on the other hand, transformed into a lethal Easter Bunny, and the Citadel of Ricks made an unexpected reappearance. The upcoming episode, titled “The CuRicksous Case of Bethjamin Button”, is expected to center around Rick’s daughters and offers a sneak peek through a fresh cold open, providing series enthusiasts with a glimpse into what’s to come. In a funny twist, the animated show has shown a fondness for paying tribute to a renowned TV series to boost the humor.
Earlier in the current season, Space Beth and Rick embarked on an exciting journey, battling one of the most significant alien menaces that have plagued Rick Sanchez and his kin since the series’ inception. Without delay, it appears that Space Beth is preparing for another adventure alongside her Earth-dwelling comrade. To this point, neither viewers nor even Rick himself are certain which Beth is the genuine one. Although the creators haven’t given any hints about which Beth is the clone, this episode could potentially reveal the answer and shed light on its potential implications for the storyline to come. Interestingly, the show starts by playing the theme from Cheers, recalling the cherished sitcom and creating an intriguing crossover event.
The Smith Doppelgangers
In the upcoming episode, Beth and her counterpart will take center stage, but they aren’t the only pairs of doppelgangers in the animated show. We had a chat with Harry Belden, who voices Morty, about his method for portraying his character’s duplicates in the latest season. As he puts it, “It’s a blend. For Episode Three, I walked in and thought, ‘Alright, there are many Mortys in the script.’ It can be tough to recall, but I believe they had some visual references like, ‘Here’s what Doc Morty will look like, he wears glasses,’ which helps a lot in giving my imagination some direction. Then we just go, ‘Okay, how should this one sound?’
I observed as Belden elaborated on his unique approach to portraying Morty’s variants, “It doesn’t require a distinct voice change, but you’ll notice it. Frankly, I was taken aback the other night, thinking, ‘Wow.’ It’s the same voice, yet there’s such a striking difference, and you can instantly tell whether that’s Doc Morty or Arcade Morty just by listening.” It’s evident with the two Beths that despite their shared DNA, they have evolved into distinct personalities at this stage.
