Ringo Starr reveals what happened when he visited set of upcoming The Beatles biopics – and talks meeting actor Barry Keoghan

Ringo Starr recently visited the set of the new Beatles movie and spent time with the actor playing him, Barry Keoghan.

Barry Keoghan, the Irish actor, will portray the Beatles’ drummer in a new four-part film series. Sam Mendes is directing, and Jack Thorne, known for his work on ‘Adolescence,’ wrote the screenplay.

Four movies will be released simultaneously in 2028, each one telling the story of a different member of the band.

Ringo Starr, one of the two surviving Beatles (born Richard Starkey), has shared details about an upcoming film about his life. He recently spent a day with actor Barry Keoghan at his Los Angeles home as Keoghan prepares to play him in the movie.

Speaking to the BBC, Ringo said: “It wasn’t like one of those in-depth things.”

He playfully pointed out that Keoghan didn’t overthink things, like which hand to use when picking his nose. He explained that Keoghan was simply relaxed and friendly, just casually saying hello.

The Beatles’ new film is currently being filmed on location in Liverpool and central London, as well as at Bovingdon Airfield Studios. Cast members have been spotted shooting scenes in these areas.

Starr knows about the leaked scripts, but he wouldn’t say how closely the movie follows them or if any changes were made for dramatic effect.

He did visit the set, but he admitted it was a little confusing at first because he initially thought of the project as a documentary.

“They are not documentaries, they are films and I had to get used to that,” he added.

He playfully suggested that fans wanting to choose between the four films should settle in for a long viewing session – and bring snacks, like sandwiches, to get them through it all.

Barry Keoghan will portray Ringo Starr in the upcoming film, with Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison rounding out the Beatles lineup.

The film also stars Lucy Boynton, Aimee Lou Wood, David Morrissey, James Norton, and Saoirse Ronan.

Mia McKenna-Bruce will play Starr’s first wife, Maureen Starkey.

The Beatles: A Four-Film Cinema Experience will be released in 2028.
