It’s been twelve years since Katherine Parkinson won a Bafta for her comedic role as Jen Barber in The IT Crowd. She’s now nominated for the same award again, this time for playing Rachel Jessop in Here We Go. She’s discussing the nomination, her on-screen chemistry with her co-star, and her exciting new part in the upcoming Harry Potter television series.
You were a nominee for Lizzie in the Rivals competition last year, and this year you’re nominated for Rachel in Here We Go. What similarities do these two characters share?
I didn’t expect to win last year, and I don’t expect to win this year, which is fine with me. Jessica Gunning deserved her win for Baby Reindeer, and this year I’m confident someone else will win – and that’s perfectly okay! It actually takes the pressure off, because I don’t have to write a funny acceptance speech and can just enjoy the evening.

People often mention the chemistry between you and Jim Howick, who plays your husband Paul. With both of you nominated for Baftas, would you describe yourselves as a comedic duo?
Although it can be quite stressful to play, I really like how quickly the characters become intensely angry with each other. When we first started, I wondered if my reactions were too extreme, but then I spent time with my own parents and realized that Paul and Rachel’s relationship feels very real and genuine.
So, you’re taking on the role of Mrs. Weasley in the new Harry Potter TV series. Was it a straightforward decision to accept the part?
As a mother, I felt I had to accept the role – my children wouldn’t have understood if I’d turned it down. It really wasn’t a difficult decision at all.
The Bafta Television Awards are on Sunday 11 May at 7pm on BBC One.
