Robert Pattinson is catching a new role.
Actor Jackson Rathbone, known from the Twilight films, is taking on a spooky new part in the upcoming A24 movie Primetime. He’ll be playing Chris Hansen, the host of the former TV show To Catch a Predator, in the film, which is scheduled for release this fall.
A recent trailer for the movie, released on May 27th, features Pattinson wearing the distinctive suit and tie favored by Hansen, and includes voiceover work from Pattinson using a low, enigmatic tone.
In a preview of the show, the actor, playing Hansen, asks a question in the style of the Dateline host from the early 2000s: “If I wasn’t here, what would have happened?” He then points out the implications of the situation, stating, “Look at how this appears. Ultimately, men should be responsible for their choices. Do you agree with that?”
While Pattinson narrates, the film shows security camera footage similar to the style of the old NBC show To Catch a Predator. Several clips feature his co-stars, Phoebe Bridgers and Skylar Gisondo.
He kept talking, the video clips speeding up to create tension. “By the way,” he said, “I’m Chris Hansen from Dateline NBC. And you’re about to be on TV – as part of history!”
The screen fades to black, and a woman confidently declares, “We’re going to be the number one show on TV.”
At its most popular, To Catch a Predator was a ratings hit for NBC, averaging more than 6 million viewers each episode.
Despite its initial success, the Dateline franchise eventually ended after a series of issues. One particularly tragic event involved William Conradt Jr., a Texas assistant district attorney, who took his own life in 2006 after being confronted by the show’s investigative team. His sister later sued NBC, claiming the show was responsible for his death, and though she initially sought $109 million, the case was settled for an undisclosed sum in 2008.
NBC and the lawyer representing Conradt’s sister released a joint statement saying they had reached a friendly agreement that everyone involved was happy with.
Host Chris Hansen left NBC in 2013 when his contract wasn’t renewed. In 2020, he launched his podcast, Predators I’ve Caught, which is inspired by his work on the Dateline show.
