Steam Deck Gets Massive New Price Increase From Valve

Valve announced today that the price of the Steam Deck handheld is going up. For months, people have been waiting for news about Valve’s Steam Machine, and while it’s still expected to launch this year, it’s been delayed due to a shortage of RAM. This same shortage is now affecting the Steam Deck, leading to a significant price increase.

Valve has recently updated its Steam Deck website with higher prices for both available models. The 512GB OLED version now costs $789, an increase of over $200 from its previous price of $549. The 1TB OLED model has seen an even larger price jump of $300, bringing the new retail price to $949. With Valve no longer making the original LCD Steam Deck, these OLED models are the only ones customers can buy directly from the company.

Valve didn’t explain the price increase in detail, but stated it was necessary due to rising component costs and ongoing global supply chain issues affecting the entire industry. They also confirmed the price change isn’t related to any modifications made to the Steam Deck hardware itself.

The delay in Steam Deck availability is frustrating for potential buyers, and it raises concerns about the future of the Steam Machine. Valve has described the Steam Machine as a more powerful version of the Deck. Given that the higher-end Steam Deck models are already nearing the $1,000 price point, it seems unlikely the Steam Machine will be any cheaper than that.

So, still no firm release date for the Steam Machine, unfortunately. Valve keeps saying it should be out before the end of June, though. As soon as I hear anything concrete, I’ll definitely let you know right here!
