Microsoft is considering a return to making Xbox games only available on its own platform. This potential shift comes as new leaders assess the Xbox brand and prepare to launch Project Helix.
According to Jez Cordon of Windows Central, Microsoft is having significant internal discussions about game exclusivity. He recently mentioned on a podcast that company executives are increasingly aware that Xbox and its games are key to connecting with customers outside of work and professional settings.
For years, games made by Xbox have only been available on Xbox consoles and PCs. Recently, however, Xbox tried something new by releasing four of its games – Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded – on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
Microsoft has been increasingly focused on bringing its games to platforms beyond Xbox. Now, it’s generally expected that any game published by Xbox will be available on PlayStation 5 either when it’s first released, or shortly after – as seen with Forza Horizon 6. Halo: Combat Evolved and Fable are also confirmed to be coming to PS5, and Gears of War: E-Day is likely to follow, building on the success of the first Gears of War game already available on PlayStation 5 as Gears of War: Reloaded.
For years, the Halo series was considered a key exclusive for Microsoft and a major draw for Xbox fans. But now, even Halo is coming to PlayStation 5 with a complete remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved. According to Brian Jarrad, the community director, this marks a shift, and Halo games will be available on PlayStation “going forward.”
Offering games only available on Project Helix would definitely appeal to dedicated gamers. However, Microsoft will likely be hesitant to give up the revenue it’s currently earning from releasing games on PlayStation 5. For instance, Forza Horizon 5 has been very successful on PS5, and the next installment is predicted to perform just as well.
