Ryan Reynolds tried something different with his latest movie, a blend of animation and live-action. While critics weren’t impressed when it came out in 2024, it’s now become a hit on Netflix. The film has quickly climbed to the #4 spot on the Top 10 list, with fans of all ages tuning in and hoping to push it to the very top.
The new movie IF, written and directed by John Krasinski, tells the story of Bea, a young girl who discovers she can see the imaginary friends that grown-ups have forgotten. While staying with her grandmother because her father is sick, she meets Cal (Reynolds), who’s working to connect these forgotten friends with new children. Although the movie has a sweet and touching idea, critics haven’t been very kind, giving it a score of only 51%.
Was IF Really As Bad As Critics Say?
Viewers generally liked the movie, giving it an 85% rating. However, critics felt it heavily borrowed from Pixar films without achieving the same depth or artistry. As critic Sammie Purcell put it, while the movie is about imagination, it doesn’t feel very imaginative itself. Most agreed that the film depended more on its famous actors and impressive effects than a compelling story or emotional connection.
Regular moviegoers had a pretty positive, though not overly enthusiastic, reaction to the film. Many enjoyed the funny visuals and jokes, even if the ending didn’t feel fully satisfying. One viewer praised it as a thoughtful and emotional story about grief, growing up, and losing the innocence of childhood, highlighting the strong direction and acting. As with many films, critics and general audiences seem to have different ideas about what makes a movie good – a debate that’s been happening since the beginning of cinema. Essentially, IF is a story about how we lose touch with our imaginations as we face the realities of life, a theme that resonates with a lot of people.
