Savannah Guthrie Abruptly Leaves Today Mid-Show

Savannah Guthrie had to slip out during her latest on-air segment.

During the May 6th broadcast of Today, Savannah Guthrie unexpectedly left the show about 90 minutes in. Her co-host, Craig Melvin, briefly explained to viewers that she had to leave early, but assured them she would be back the next day.

It’s unclear why she left. TopMob News has reached out to reps for Today but hasn’t heard back.

I was SO relieved to see Savannah back on Today in April! She’d been off for two months, and I was seriously worried. Apparently, she was just trying to be with her family during this awful time, while they’re dealing with the mystery of what happened to her mom, Nancy Guthrie. It’s just heartbreaking, but I’m glad she’s back where she belongs.

Nancy, an 84-year-old woman, was reported missing from her home in Arizona on February 1st. Police suspect she was abducted. They found security camera footage showing someone with a mask going to her house before she disappeared and damaging the camera with a punch.

I’ve been so worried about this case. Savannah, along with her brother Camron Guthrie and sister Annie Guthrie, have repeatedly made public appeals, desperately asking for anyone with information to help bring their mother home safely. It’s heartbreaking to see them go through this.

In a March interview with Hoda Kotb, Savannah said, “Someone needs to step up and do what’s right. We are suffering terribly, and it’s just too much to bear.”

As a mom, I completely understand those sleepless nights. I often wake up in the middle of the night, and my mind immediately goes to my kids. Even though it’s scary to think about, I find myself dwelling on what they might be going through, especially when they’re not around. It’s a natural instinct, I think – those thoughts just surface, and you can’t help but process them.

Still, Savannah is hopeful about Nancy’s return.

She went on, saying she hadn’t lost hope and was still fundamentally herself. She admitted she wasn’t sure what the future held, or who she would become, but she knew she would continue to exist and evolve.

Although the police have ruled out Savannah and her family as suspects, she strongly denied any suggestion that they might have been involved in Nancy’s disappearance.

It’s just… devastating, honestly. It feels like one heartbreak after another. My mom received the most incredible care from my sister and brother-in-law – they truly went above and beyond for her. And my brother? He was her fiercest protector. No one could have done more for her than they did.

Savannah shared, “She means everything to us – we adore her. She’s the heart of our family, and truly all we have.”

For a complete timeline of Nancy’s disappearance, read on.

Nancy Guthrie, mother to Annie, Camron, and Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her home in Tucson, Arizona, around 9:30 p.m. on January 31st, according to the Pima County police.

Police confirmed to Today that Nancy, 84, was reported missing by her family on February 1st. A friend became worried when Nancy didn’t attend church that morning and let her family know. After searching her property for about an hour, her children contacted the authorities around noon to report her missing.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos later explained the first steps taken in the investigation, which involved detectives specializing in homicides, at the victim’s home.

We usually don’t involve the sheriff in situations like this, but the details coming from the house are very troubling,” he explained to reporters on February 2nd. “This case was particularly unusual based on what officers described and what we discovered at the scene.

This isn’t how things usually work,” Nanos explained. “Normally, our homicide detectives are called to investigate when someone dies. In this case, we sent them based on what the land surveyors reported.”

After looking into the situation, authorities stated they think a crime happened at Nancy’s house.

During a press conference on February 2nd, Nanos stated that investigators now believe they have confirmed a crime scene after processing the area. He asked for the public’s assistance, noting that the community has historically been helpful in solving difficult cases and he hopes they will help again.

The sheriff pointed to Nancy’s difficulty walking – she couldn’t walk even a short distance on her own – as a key reason to suspect she didn’t disappear voluntarily.

He stated definitively that she didn’t simply leave on her own, emphasizing, “There’s evidence at the location suggesting she didn’t leave voluntarily.”

I’m just beside myself with worry about Nancy! The police keep saying she needs her medication every single day to stay healthy, and the thought of her being out there without it is just…it’s terrifying. I can’t stop imagining how much she must be suffering if she doesn’t have it. Every minute feels like an eternity until they find her.

During a press conference on February 2nd, Nanos explained that an 84-year-old woman under his care is facing serious health problems and urgently needs medication. Without it within 24 hours, her condition could become life-threatening.

We’re asking anyone with information about this case – if you’ve seen or heard anything – to please get in touch with us. Please call 911. We want to avoid another tragedy and need the public’s help.

Although Nancy has faced some health challenges, Dr. Nanos highlighted that her mind remains sharp.

According to Nanos, Nancy Guthrie is mentally alert and this situation isn’t connected to dementia. She’s very sharp and aware. The family wants to emphasize that she didn’t simply wander off, and any physical limitations are simply due to her age.

With the search for Nancy still underway, Nanos expressed his wish for her to come home safely.

“I hope we find her safe and sound,” he emphasized, “but we cannot ignore what’s in front of us.”

The day after Nancy was reported missing, the anchor of the Today show publicly shared how difficult this time is for her family.

Speaking for my family, I want to express our gratitude for all the kind thoughts, prayers, and messages we’ve received,” she told NBC’s morning show on February 2nd. “Our top priority right now is bringing Nancy home safely.

As a concerned citizen, I want to express my gratitude to the law enforcement officers who have worked so diligently on this case. I truly believe that if anyone has even the smallest piece of information that could help, they should absolutely reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Every little bit counts, and I hope we can all work together to help them.

Once Savannah Guthrie learned her mother, Nancy, had been reported missing, her colleagues on the Today show immediately voiced their support.

Jenna Bush Hager shared on the February 2nd episode of Today with Jenna & Sheinelle that she is personally close to Nancy and expressed her affection for her.

She continued, saying they were thinking of Savannah and her family and sending their prayers to everyone affected.

Meanwhile, Sheinelle Jones emphasized the importance of community during this difficult time.

She felt the show truly showcased the community at its finest when it asked viewers to reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s department with any information related to the case, even if it seemed insignificant.

She added, “So we’re sending our prayers but we’re also sending our collective action.”

Before concluding the segment, both hosts continued, “We love you, Savannah.”

And Sunday Today anchor Willie Geist also urged fans to keep an eye out for Nancy.

On February 2nd, he posted on Instagram asking anyone with information about the whereabouts of Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy, to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Arizona. He also included the department’s phone number, stating that she was missing.

Savannah’s former colleague, Hoda Kotb, responded to the surprising news by sharing a heartwarming photo of Savannah and Nancy together on the Today show set. In a simple Instagram post on February 2nd, Hoda included just a red heart and praying hands emoji in the caption.

Police have labeled Nancy’s home in Arizona a crime scene, but they don’t think the public needs to be concerned for their safety.

Pima County Sheriff Nanos said at a press conference on February 2nd that he doesn’t believe there’s a current danger, but emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing.

I’ve been SO worried about Savannah! She’s been off Today since February 1st, ever since her mom disappeared, and it’s just been awful. Thankfully, I read that the local police are in touch with her, making sure she’s okay, which is a tiny bit of relief, honestly. I just want her back on TV and everything to be alright!

I’ve been updated by the sheriff – they’ve definitely spoken with her. It sounds like she has a professional security team who’ve been proactively communicating with law enforcement all night, which is good. However, they’re keeping all possibilities open and aren’t ruling anything out at this stage, and that’s the smart approach.

On Feb. 2, Pima County police shared a series of updates on the timeline of Nancy’s disappearance.

Investigators now think the woman was likely taken from her home against her will, potentially while she was sleeping, according to a Pima County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson on February 2nd. Detectives are investigating the possibility that she was kidnapped.

After news broke that Nancy might have been taken from her home in Arizona while she was sleeping, Savannah made a heartfelt plea.

In a recent Instagram post from February 2nd, she shared her faith, writing about the power of prayer, the strength of unity, and a belief in love, hope, goodness, and humanity—ultimately, a belief in a higher power.

Savannah continued, thanking everyone for keeping her mother, Nancy, in their thoughts and prayers. She described Nancy as a woman of strong beliefs and a devoted person, and asked for continued prayers, believing they would provide comfort and strength right now.

She added, “we need you.”

To conclude her plea, Savannah shared a Bible verse from Isaiah.

She shared a verse from Isaiah, writing, ‘He will keep those with steadfast hearts, who trust in the Lord, in perfect peace.’ She believed this message held timeless wisdom for everyone.

Savannah continued, “Bring her home.”

Pima County Sheriff Nanos stated that DNA evidence was discovered at Nancy’s home, which is now being treated as a crime scene.

We collected samples and are hoping they contain enough DNA to help us identify what we’re searching for, he told NBC News in a report on Today on February 3rd.

At a press conference held two days after Nancy went missing, Nanos explained what happened leading up to her disappearance.

According to Nanos, the doorbell camera stopped working at 1:47 a.m., just about four hours after she got back from a family visit, as she explained in a press conference on February 5th.

The software identified someone at the door, but the video was automatically deleted because Nancy didn’t have a paid subscription. However, the representative assured her they were still working to recover the recording.

The sheriff explained that Nancy’s pacemaker app lost connection with her phone at 2:28 a.m. The family found her missing at 11:56 a.m., and 911 was called to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department just three minutes later, at 12:03 p.m.

About ten minutes after that, he explained that when their patrol teams reach the location, they begin responding by deploying search and rescue, along with detectives from different units.

On February 4th, Savannah, Camron, and Annie read letters hoping to secure their mother’s safe return. The letters were addressed to both their mom, Nancy, and anyone who might be holding her, asking for her release.

In a video posted to Instagram, the family spokesperson said they’re doing everything possible and are willing to communicate. They emphasized the need for absolute proof that their loved one is still alive and in the possession of those who have her, given how easily videos and audio can be altered these days.

My mom is the center of our world and everything to us,” she said. “Her health is very delicate, and she’s constantly in pain. Right now, she doesn’t have the medication she needs to stay alive and feel better.

The next day, Camron confirmed in a separate video that the family was still “waiting for contact.”

As someone who often helps families navigate difficult situations, I want to emphasize how crucial communication is. Right now, the family is pleading for whoever has their mother to make contact. They’ve had no direct word, and they’re desperately hoping to establish a line of communication so they can begin to resolve this and move forward. They just need to hear something.

During a press conference on February 5th, FBI agent Heith Janke announced the arrest of Derrick Callella from California. Callella is accused of sending fake text messages as part of a scheme to make money, which Janke described as an impersonation. Authorities are also investigating a detailed ransom letter shared with TMZ and are taking the threat very seriously. Callella has not yet entered a plea and was released on a $20,000 bond.

However, he noted, the Guthrie family was “still waiting for communication.”

As a devoted follower, I was really keeping up with everything. On February 7th, after news broke that authorities had searched Annie’s place in Arizona – they said it was just a routine part of the investigation – Savannah posted another video on Instagram. It felt like she was letting us know they’d gotten what they were asking for.

Speaking while holding hands with Camron and Annie, she said they had received the message and understood its meaning. She pleaded for their mother’s return, explaining it was the only way they could find peace and celebrate with her.

And if her intentions weren’t clear, Savannah added, “This is very valuable to us and we will pay.”

Investigators shared surveillance photos of a person of interest in the case on February 10th.

Footage from a camera on Nancy’s property shows a person wearing a ski mask and carrying a backpack walking up to the house. The individual then appears to punch the camera, damaging it. Police had previously noted the camera was broken when they responded to the property.

For the past eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been collaborating with private companies to find any lost, damaged, or hidden images and videos from Nancy Guthrie’s home. This effort included recovering data after recording devices were removed. The recovered video was found as leftover data within the systems themselves, according to a statement shared with TopMob News.

“Working with our partners,” the note continued, “law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance.”

Two days after the FBI shared video of the person who went near Nancy’s house, investigators provided a description of the suspect.

According to the FBI’s Phoenix office, the suspect is a man between 5’9” and 5’10” tall with an average build. He was seen in a video wearing a black ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack’ backpack with a capacity of 25 liters.

Okay, so the FBI just announced they’re DOUBLING the reward for any info on Nancy! Can you believe it? It’s now $100,000 for anyone who can tell them where she is, or help them catch whoever took her. I’m just… I’m so desperate to find her, and this means maybe, just maybe, someone will finally come forward. It’s amazing, and I’m praying it works. Every little bit helps, and this is a HUGE boost. I’m checking every news site constantly, hoping for an update!

After Nancy had been missing for over two weeks, Pima County Sheriff Nanos released a statement to explain who might be connected to the case.

In a statement on February 16th, authorities confirmed that the entire Guthrie family – including all siblings and their spouses – has been ruled out as suspects in this case. They noted the family has been fully cooperative and are themselves considered victims.

The gloves discovered close to Nancy’s house didn’t seem to connect with the rest of the evidence in the case, according to police.

On March 2nd, Pima County Sheriff Nanos stated to KVOA, the local NBC station, that investigators initially believed a pair of gloves found about two miles from the victim’s home – gloves that contained DNA – were related to a restaurant. This was nearly three weeks after the gloves were discovered.

Although some people noticed the gloves in the doorbell camera footage looked similar to those found near the crime scene, Nanos dismissed this as just a guess. They identified the glove’s owner as an employee of a local restaurant and confirmed the gloves were unrelated to the investigation.
