Sega had hinted at reviving classic games like Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi, but they’ve now revealed a larger plan called Sega Universe to showcase all their older franchises. With the slogan “No old, stay gold,” Sega admits on their website that some beloved games have faded over time, and they aim to bring attention back to them.
Sega’s official website doesn’t clearly state their overall strategy for reviving classic game franchises. However, they appear to be considering expanding beyond just making games, and moving into areas like movies, music, and fashion – and even other types of entertainment. A video showcases some of these potential plans.
I just saw this amazing video, and it looks like Sega is getting ready to release a new line of merchandise based on some of their older, classic games! They’re hinting at stuff related to NiGHTS and Sakura Wars, which is already getting me excited. The coolest part? The character in the video looks out her window, and the whole city is covered in references to old Sega titles – I spotted things from Rent A Hero and OutRun, and I’m sure there’s even more hidden in there! It’s a total nostalgia trip.
Sega is planning revivals for several of its beloved classic game franchises, including Fantasy Zone, OutRun, Streets of Rage, Rent A Hero, Guardian Heroes, NiGHTS, Dynamite Deka, Sakura Wars, and SGGG. A dedicated website also offers a chance to listen to iconic music from these games, representing Sega’s history from arcade cabinets to the Dreamcast console.
Sega’s remake of Jet Set Radio will take place in an open world, as announced in December 2023. While details are still limited, Sega has said players will be able to experience a rebellious story set in an oppressive society, build friendships, gain followers, and grow a movement.
In 2024, rumors surfaced suggesting the new Jet Set Radio game would be built similarly to Fortnite. While details are scarce, reports indicate the game might include shooting elements alongside the classic graffiti and skating. Additionally, a remastered version of the original Jet Set Radio is reportedly coming out before the reboot.
Sega has announced that the upcoming reboot of Crazy Taxi will be a large-scale, online multiplayer game with an open world. Details about the game, described as being similar to a theme park experience, were revealed in recent job postings.
Sega hasn’t announced official release dates for the remakes of Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi. However, a report from February 2024 suggested Sega was planning to release the new Jet Set Radio game in 2026, and Crazy Taxi in 2027. Both games are also rumored to be in development for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, in addition to other consoles and PC.
