Shonen Jump’s Biggest Sports Series Announces Its Series Finale

Anime isn’t just about epic fights like those in Dragon Ball and One Piece. Sports anime, such as Haikyu!!, Slam Dunk, Hajime no Ippo, and Blue Lock, have also become incredibly popular by bringing a unique anime style to well-known sports. Sadly, one of the most popular sports anime currently running in Weekly Shonen Jump is nearing its conclusion, with the sequel series building towards a big finale this summer.

Manga artist Takeshi Konomi recently announced on social media that The Prince of Tennis is nearing its conclusion. With just two chapters left in the series, Konomi shared that this month’s issue was particularly meaningful to him, as he was determined to portray Ryoga’s difficult decision regarding his family. He revealed that the new movie, Ryoma!, was created to build a connection to this emotional moment. Konomi promises to finish the series strongly so fans can enjoy it until the very end.

The Prince of Tennis Will End

If you’re new to the world of competitive tennis anime, The Prince of Tennis began as a manga series in Weekly Shonen Jump back in 1999. It quickly became incredibly popular, expanding into multiple anime series, films, video games, live-action shows, and tons of merchandise. The original manga finished in 2008, but a sequel, The Prince of Tennis II, started in 2009 and has actually surpassed the original in terms of the number of chapters released.

The first anime series of The Prince of Tennis aired for four years and included about 170 episodes. The sequel has been handled differently by Studio M.S.C., which has released seasons over time to adapt the continuing story. A new season is coming this fall, titled The Prince of Tennis: U-17 World Cup Finals Members Decisive Match. Given the ongoing nature of the series, it’s likely we’ll see even more anime adaptations in the future to finish telling the story.

After working on the tennis manga for many years, it’s understandable to think Takeshi Konomo might retire. However, there’s still a chance for another continuation of the story. A special event called the “Surprise Summit Event” is planned for next month, and it might reveal what’s next for the series after this final installment.
