I’ve noticed a pattern in most Shonen Jump stories: the main characters always start with big dreams and, despite everything they go through, they eventually achieve them. It’s almost a given. That’s what makes Yuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen so different, and honestly, so heartbreaking. He didn’t have some grand ambition; his goal was actually quite simple. But even that simple wish was taken away from him. What’s more, he’s stuck with a curse that seems to prevent him from ever getting it, which makes him, in my opinion, one of the most tragic heroes in Shonen Jump history.
Yuji Itadori stands out from most heroes in Shonen Jump stories. Unlike typical protagonists who are motivated by big dreams, Yuji’s simple wish was to be surrounded by loved ones until the end of his life – a wish he inherited from his grandfather. However, the story of Jujutsu Kaisen has taken a cruel turn: Yuji remains alive while those he cares about continue to die, and he’s also denied the natural process of aging. This means he’s unlikely to ever fulfill even this basic desire, making him a particularly tragic figure among shonen heroes.
Yuji Itadori of Jujutsu Kaisen Has Emerged as the Most Tragic Shonen Jump Hero

We already knew Yuji was still alive in the future timeline of the series, which takes place almost seventy years later. Most fans figured he’d be an old man, nearing the end of his life, even though he continued working as a powerful sorcerer – widely considered the strongest, in fact. But chapter 13 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, titled “Acceptance,” completely changed my understanding. While everyone’s frantically searching for Yuji, Nobara Kugisaki shows up and reveals something heartbreaking about what’s really going on. She explains that Yuji avoids his friends’ funerals because he feels terrible watching everyone he loves grow old and die, knowing he can’t age himself.
Nobara explains that Yuji always believed he could make his grandfather’s last wish come true – a very basic human desire. The fact that he hasn’t been seen lately, choosing to live alone and fight curses in a body that won’t age, shows how deeply he’s suffering. Even more concerning, it seems Yuji will eventually return, only to face an enemy as powerful as Sukuna.
It seems Yuji might face his final moments here, but if he falls, it will be fighting – a far cry from the peaceful old age he once wished for. Having already lost almost everyone he cares about, his dream will never come true, making him arguably the most tragic hero in Shonen Jump history, surpassing all others in sorrow.
