Fans will soon be able to revisit the world of Shrek in a new movie coming to theaters in 2027. Even though the sequel isn’t out for over a year, star Mike Myers is hinting that even more Shrek films could be made.
During a recent appearance on his podcast, Fly on the Wall, Dana Carvey shared that he discussed the future of Shrek with his friend and former colleague, Mike Myers. Carvey said Myers told him they are planning to make two more Shrek movies after the fifth film, suggesting fans can expect further installments in the popular series.
Did Mike Myers Just Confirm Shrek 6?
Mike Myers has hinted that a sixth Shrek movie is in the works. Although DreamWorks hasn’t officially announced another sequel after Shrek 5, it seems likely. The Shrek franchise has been quiet since Shrek Forever After came out in 2010, with only spin-offs released since then. It’s been over ten years since a new Shrek movie appeared in theaters.
It wouldn’t be financially smart for DreamWorks to reboot a big franchise like this with only one movie. Even with some pre-release issues, the people making the films would be missing out on a chance to make more money if they didn’t approve a sixth installment and keep the series going.
Mike Myers Confirmed Shrek 6, But Not Shrek 7
Although Mike Myers has hinted at two more Shrek movies being worked on, fans shouldn’t expect Shrek 7 anytime soon. The Shrek series is growing in other ways too, with plans for new spin-off movies centered around popular characters from the original films.
A spin-off movie focusing on Donkey from the Shrek films is planned for release in 2028. The film will center around Donkey, his dragon wife, and their half-dragon, half-donkey children. This project is likely the second film Mike Myers mentioned he was working on, and it’s separate from any potential seventh Shrek movie.
A seventh Shrek movie isn’t off the table. Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, Shrek 7 seems likely if the upcoming Shrek 5 and 6 are successful in theaters. If things go well, Shrek could break numerous box office records in 2027 and 2028, potentially leading to many more sequels and spin-off films in the future.
Shrek 5 opens in theaters on June 30, 2027.
