The God of War series is a huge success for Sony, and players are eagerly anticipating the next installment, God of War: Laufey. In a surprising move that confirms earlier rumors, the game will star Kratos’ wife, Laufey (also known as Faye), instead of Kratos himself. While some fans are disappointed by this change and feel the game doesn’t align with Kratos’ story, Sony and Santa Monica Studio have assured everyone that Kratos will still be a key part of the God of War franchise as they begin a new storyline.
God of War’s Future Involved Kratos
During a recent interview, Cory Barlog, creative leader at Santa Monica Studio, and Ariel Lawrence, Game Director for God of War: Laufey, explained the decision to create a new game centered around Faye, the giantess who played a key role in both God of War and God of War Ragnarök. Their comments reassured fans that the direction of the series is well thought out.
We plan to continue making Kratos games for years to come, and we’re really enthusiastic about the future of the series. Kratos is central to the God of War universe, and we have plenty more stories to explore with him. Right now, we’re thrilled to invite players to experience the afterlife of the gods alongside Faye, and we hope everyone joins us on this adventure!
In a recent interview, Lawrence explained that she hadn’t anticipated the studio shifting its focus away from Kratos. This move towards featuring Laufey is part of a larger plan to expand the God of War universe, something they’ve already done with God of War: Sons of Sparta, which showed a younger Kratos and his brother, Deimos. Given this approach, it’s likely we’ll see a future game where Atreus takes the lead.
Kratos is a beloved character, and it’s smart that Santa Monica Studio didn’t permanently remove him from the story, despite his relatively happy conclusion in God of War: Ragnarok. He’s been a staple of PlayStation games for years, and fans would have been upset if Sony stopped using him. However, God of War: Laufey represents an important change in how the series tells its stories, though this change may not be permanent.
This new approach opens the door for more God of War spin-off games centered around different characters. While Sindri has been suggested, it’s difficult to picture him in a traditional action RPG. He’d be better suited to a different genre, and Sons of Sparta demonstrated that the God of War universe can support compelling stories with fresh gameplay styles.
PlayStation has been successfully trying out new approaches with its games. We’ve seen this with titles like Ghost of Tsushima, where the focus shifted from Jin to Atsu, and The Last of Us, which made Ellie the main character after Joel. The change to Laufey as the lead in God of War is a big step for the studio, even if it’s just a standalone game or a spin-off. Other game developers have proven that switching protagonists can work well, and early signs suggest this will be another successful example.
