South Park season 27 finally has its streaming home after $1.5 billion bidding war

Delighted South Park enthusiasts! The popular animated series has made its return to the airwaves in the UK. Tonight, a fresh installment will debut on Comedy Central UK.

The provocative satire was at the heart of intense talks between creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, together with their production firm Park County, and their longstanding associates at Paramount Global.

Currently, the media titan is working towards combining forces with Skydance, a significant player in Hollywood as both a producer and funder. It’s said that Skydance initially expressed reservations about the 10-year, $3 billion agreement that was proposed to ensure the longevity of South Park.

In the aftermath of our recent discussions, it appears that the international streaming rights for South Park have expired, causing the series to be removed from Paramount+ globally, excluding the U.S. Additionally, the release date for the season 27 premiere has been pushed back by two weeks.

Lucky for us, after a fierce competition over the rights, a solution has been reached, and as of today, you can find an impressive 316 episodes of South Park back on Paramount+ UK, resuming normal service.

The upcoming episodes are initially set to broadcast on Comedy Central UK before appearing on a streaming platform. Tonight at 10pm, the season 27 premiere titled “Sermon on the Mount” will make its debut on this premium channel.

Under the five-year contract, reportedly worth $1.5 billion (as stated by the Los Angeles Times), there seems to be a significant reduction in the initial offer. This agreement includes a commitment to produce 50 additional episodes of South Park, although the specifics about how these new stories will be distributed are yet undetermined.

Over time, the number of episodes per season for South Park has been decreasing significantly. It initially reached its highest point during the second season, boasting a total of 18 episodes. However, in more recent seasons, this count has dropped dramatically, with only six episodes per season being produced.

Instead, these have been supplemented with long-form Paramount+ exclusives like “The Streaming Wars,” “Welcome to the Panderverse,” and “The Demise of Overweightness,” all of which aim their humorous critique at contemporary societal and cultural phenomena.

Currently, we’re in a state where we simply need to be patient and observe what Parker and Stone are preparing for us. However, loyal enthusiasts can find solace in the fact that the spell of ambiguity is finally lifted.

Chris McCarthy, Co-CEO of Paramount Global, expressed: “Matt Stone and Trey Parker are unique creative minds whose fearless humor and boundary-breaking storytelling have made South Park one of the most cherished and long-lasting series; it’s more popular now than it has ever been in its history, and one of the most valuable TV franchises globally.

We’re delighted that South Park will continue to call Comedy Central and Paramount+ its global homes for many years, thanks to the Skydance team’s crucial collaboration in making this possible. They are remarkable talents and reliable partners we appreciate deeply.

South Park season 27 premieres tonight at 10pm on Comedy Central UK.
