Randall Cobb has reached the end of his rope.
The former NFL player unexpectedly withdrew from season four of Fox’s Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test just 12 hours before finishing the intense training program.
What made the retired athlete suddenly quit right before achieving his goal?
After eight days of intense challenges, the final six recruits faced a realistic wartime exercise. Divided into two teams of three, they had to find a hidden safe house in the Moroccan desert while evading enemy forces. Making it even harder, they had to navigate the difficult desert landscape completely in the dark.
After running almost three miles, Andrew East brought Randall and Gia Giudice into a risky area, leaving them exposed. Randall was particularly anxious throughout the challenging simulated special forces exercise.
The 35-year-old confessed to feeling anxious about facing unfamiliar and potentially difficult situations, saying he feared being overwhelmed by them.
Suddenly, the opposing team surrounded Randall, Gia, and Andrew, pretending to capture them – which meant their team didn’t succeed in the drill.
During the practice attack, the three athletes had sacks over their heads and their hands were bound with zip ties to make it feel like a genuine capture. Despite being just a training drill, the situation felt so real that the athlete couldn’t continue competing.
“V.W. V. W.,” Randall said, indicating he was choosing to end his participation. He pleaded, “Please, please.”

Shaken and still being freed from his restraints, the former quarterback confessed, “It felt so incredibly realistic, I just froze up.”
The feeling was one Special Forces director Mark “Billy” Billingham was all too familiar with.
Speaking in a private moment, the veteran admitted, “I’ve been captured, and it’s the most terrifying experience of my life.” He described a whirlwind of thoughts, especially about his family, and a complete uncertainty about what the future held.
Billy understood why Randall decided to leave, but the rest of the directing team was upset that he quit so suddenly.
Watching from the sidelines, Rodolpho “Rudy” Reyes expressed his disappointment, saying, “I can’t believe he’s been voluntarily withdrawn. He was one of our strongest recruits, and it’s sad to see him leave.”
Randall was eliminated with only 12 hours remaining in the competition. That leaves five recruits—Andrew, Gia, Kody Brown, Shawn Johnson, and Brianna “Chickenfry” LaPaglia—who will advance to the final, most challenging stage: Capture and interrogation.
In a preview for next week’s finale, Billy described the upcoming challenge as “12 hours of total mental and physical torture.” He explained that contestants will need to persevere through the pain, continuing until they receive a signal that it’s over.
Don’t miss the final five celebrities battling it out on Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test, airing Thursday at 9 p.m. on Fox.
