A classic Final Fantasy game is now available to download for free for those with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or PC Game Pass subscription on Xbox Series X and PC. While it’s uncertain how long the game will remain available at no extra cost, similar games are typically added for 12 to 24 months. Because it isn’t an Xbox-owned game, it won’t be a permanent addition to the service.
The Final Fantasy game now available on Xbox and PC Game Pass is Final Fantasy 6, a groundbreaking RPG that often gets overshadowed by its more famous sequel. Many fans consider it the best in the series, and it was incredibly successful and well-received when it first came out. However, this isn’t the original Super Nintendo version; it’s the Pixel Remaster released in 2022, which only recently came to Xbox in 2024. Unfortunately, it’s not available for owners of the older Xbox One console.
A Landmark Final Fantasy Game
Many modern fans of the Final Fantasy series might not realize the original game was the last to use traditional 2D graphics. However, the Pixel Remaster version updates the visuals with a redesigned 2D style, along with other improvements like a remixed soundtrack, new cutscenes, re-recorded vocals, and various gameplay enhancements. Xbox players especially seem to love this updated version, giving it almost perfect reviews on the Microsoft Store.
If you’re discovering this 1990s RPG through Xbox Game Pass, plan to spend around 30 to 40 hours playing it – that’s a good amount of time for a game from that period. If you aim to complete everything, it will likely take 50 to 60 hours.
