Star Citizen Has Crossed $1 Billion in Crowdfunding

Cloud Imperium Games, the developer of the sci-fi game Star Citizen, has reached a significant milestone in its crowdfunding campaign. The studio has now received over $1 billion in contributions from more than 6.5 million players. However, despite the massive funding, a firm release date for the game remains unannounced.

The crowdfunding timeline shows several large donations have been made. Donations significantly increased in November 2025, reaching over $32 million. Specifically, almost $21 million was donated during that weekend alone.

The Star Citizen crowdfunding campaign experienced significant increases in donations during 2022 and 2023, exceeding $100 million in funding each year. However, 2025 saw a record-breaking surge, with over $230 million raised.

It’s notable that a recent surge in funding happened while Star Citizen was offering free play from May 18th to May 27th. This free period likely encouraged hesitant players to purchase the game, as regular play requires buying at least one spaceship.

In our last update on Star Citizen, we mentioned the game had raised nearly $900 million through crowdfunding.

Star Citizen launched as a crowdfunding project in 2012 and continues to be developed with support from its community. It took around four years to create the first playable version, which was released in 2016. The developers at Cloud Imperium Games have consistently updated the game since then, and in 2025, they released Alpha 4.4, introducing the Nyx system.

The Alpha 4.0 update was a significant step forward for Star Citizen, primarily because it greatly improved the game’s server system. According to the developers, each planet, landing area, and major space station now runs on its own dedicated server. This distributes the processing load across multiple machines, creating a smoother experience for players without requiring them to manually switch between servers.

As a huge Star Citizen fan, I was really excited to hear Chris Roberts talking about when we might finally see version 1.0! He mentioned in an interview that they’re aiming for a launch sometime in either 2027 or 2028, which is amazing news after all this time.

Cloud Imperium Games, the creators of Star Citizen, are also developing a related game called Squadron 42. This game will focus more on storytelling. In December, the creator, Roberts, announced that Squadron 42 is now fully playable and estimates players will spend over 40 hours experiencing the game. Currently, the team is finishing up the final touches – things like polishing the game, improving performance, and fixing any remaining bugs. They are aiming to release Squadron 42 in 2026.
