While Game of Thrones initially put HBO on the map as a major player in fantasy television, the network continues to dominate the genre with exciting new projects planned for 2026. Over the years, HBO has consistently delivered high-quality, popular shows spanning various genres, including dramas like Boardwalk Empire, Westworld, and The Leftovers, as well as comedies like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Sex and the City, and the critically acclaimed series The Wire.
The examples above demonstrate that HBO has never focused on a single type of show, such as comedies or horror. The network is known for a diverse range of programming, from gritty Westerns like Deadwood and the gangster drama The Sopranos, to lighter comedies such as Flight of the Conchords, The Comeback, and Entourage. In 2011, HBO further cemented its reputation by taking a big risk on an elaborate and costly adaptation of George R.R. Martinâs popular novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire.
Game of Thrones was a massive and groundbreaking success, proving that fantasy shows with mature themes and content could be incredibly popular and profitable. Beyond its own spinoffs, like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, the show paved the way for other well-received adult fantasy series on streaming platforms and networks. Shows such as Prime Videoâs The Mighty Nein and The Legend of Vox Machina, as well as Netflixâs Castlevania and The Witcher, all benefited from the increased demand that Game of Thrones created.
HBOâs 2026 Fantasy Slate Is Unmatched Thanks to GoT and Harry Potter
Shows like Starzâs Outlander and AMCâs Interview with the Vampire demonstrate that adult fantasy remains incredibly popular. Many shows are competing for viewers, and even after fifteen years since HBOâs adaptation of Game of Thrones first aired, new, expensive productions like Fourth Wing are aiming for similar widespread success. Every streaming platform is trying to create the next big fantasy hit, investing heavily in shows that are bigger, better, and more sophisticated than the last.
Despite other popular fantasy shows, HBO remains the leader in this genre. While shows like The Legend of Vox Machina on Prime Video have a dedicated fanbase, none have achieved the widespread success of Game of Thrones. Critically acclaimed series such as AMCâs Interview with the Vampire and Into the Badlands havenât resonated with as broad an audience, and even Netflixâs The Witcher, despite its popularity, hasnât reached the same level of hype â as evidenced by the less successful spin-off The Rats: A Witcher Tale.
HBO is really making a play for fantasy dominance, and they’re smartly looking beyond just adult-oriented shows. Seeing how well Disney’s Percy Jackson reboot did, it was only a matter of time before they tackled a huge property like Harry Potter. And boy, are they tackling it! They’re making an eight-episode TV adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopherâs Stone, and honestly, it’s poised to be the biggest TV season ever. The budget is enormous, so it’s not just about entertaining us â it needs to be a massive hit to justify the investment. I’m cautiously optimistic, but the pressure is definitely on!
This new series also faces some specific hurdles. Author J.K. Rowlingâs well-known views on transgender issues have made supporting the franchise a difficult and often divisive topic â something that wasnât a concern with the earlier Game of Thrones adaptation. Plus, many have noticed how closely the new series resembles the original movies, and even people who worked on the first films, like director Chris Columbus, have wondered if another live-action version was a good idea.
Every Other Major Network and Streaming Service Will Struggle To Beat HBOâs Fantasy Dominance
Look, I’m not worried about HBO at all. Yes, Harry Potter and the Philosopherâs Stone is a massive project for them, but it’s just one piece of a much larger fantasy puzzle. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is already confirmed for two more seasons, and we’re getting season 3 of House of the Dragon too â the Game of Thrones universe is still thriving. But honestly? I think the Baldurâs Gate 3 show they announced for 2026 has the potential to be absolutely huge. It could really blow everything else out of the water.
HBO’s new Harry Potter series is undoubtedly its most ambitious fantasy project yet, and it marks a significant change for the network. HBO has long been celebrated for its sophisticated, adult-oriented programming, so a show based on Harry Potter and the Philosopherâs Stone represents a move towards a much broader, family-friendly audience.
HBO’s Baldur’s Gate 3 Reinforces HBO’s Status As TV’s Biggest Fantasy Producer
As a huge fantasy fan, I’m really excited about the upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3 show on HBO. It’s great to see they’re still committed to mature fantasy even after Game of Thrones. Knowing Craig Mazin â the guy who brought us Chernobyl and the fantastic The Last of Us adaptation â is involved gives me a lot of hope. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a massive game, so this series is going to have to be seriously epic to really capture the scope and feel of the original, and I’m expecting just that.
The world of Baldurâs Gate, originally created for the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, has been featured in video games since 1998. Now, HBO and Craig Mazin are adapting the hugely popular 2023 game Baldurâs Gate 3 for television. If the show is as good as the game, it could lead to many more Baldurâs Gate adaptations in the future.
This could open the door for HBO to create large-scale fantasy series again, similar to Game of Thrones and inspired by hits like Baldurâs Gate 3. It would also let HBO compete with the popular fantasy shows on Prime Video, such as those based on Dungeons & Dragons and Critical Role. Even years after Game of Thrones made HBO a leader in fantasy television, the network continues to thrive in the genre through ongoing investment.
