A long-awaited storyline from Star Trek: Voyager – a series that ran from 1995 to 2001 with 172 episodes – won’t be happening. Though Kate Mulgrew’s Captain Janeway and Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine were central to the show, Robert Picardo’s character, The Doctor, was also a fan favorite. Picardo recently returned to the franchise in the 2026 series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and initially, there were plans for a significant arc for The Doctor in its third season, but those plans have now been abandoned.
I was listening to the D-Con Chamber podcast with Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating – you know, from Star Trek: Enterprise – and Robert Picardo shared something really interesting. He actually pitched an idea to the showrunners of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and they were planning to use it in season three! Apparently, it involved bringing back a story thread that was originally conceived about 30 years ago and updating it for the new series. It sounds like it could have been a cool way to connect the past and present of Star Trek.
Robert Picardo Wanted The Doctor to Meet Himself On Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Robert Picardo revealed he had proposed a story for Season 3 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy involving an encounter between the Doctor and a backup version of himself. Unfortunately, Paramount has cancelled the series, and the currently filmed Season 2 will be the last. Picardo explained that he could now discuss the idea openly since the show won’t be continuing. He referenced a Voyager episode where a future version of his emergency medical hologram, existing 700 years later, was discovered and assisting others.
Picardo explained he wanted to act alongside a younger version of himself – essentially, his ‘old self’ as he appeared at age 41. He envisioned playing against that younger version, with the 41-year-old character sharply criticizing his older self’s choices about aging and appearance, asking things like, ‘Why would you change how you look?’
I was so excited to hear that Robert Picardo had pitched a story idea for Season 3! Apparently, Noga Landau, the showrunner, was really into it. It was going to be a fun story where his character from Star Trek: Starfleet Academy met a rival program – initially, it would be all about playful insults. But then they’d discover they were essentially ‘twin’ programs, created separately, and it would even help Picardo’s character deal with some unresolved issues with his creator, De. Lewis Zimmerman. It’s a shame the Starfleet Academy show was canceled, because this storyline sounded amazing and we’ll never get to see it now.
Robert Picardo shared that he originally conceived of this idea three decades ago during his time on Voyager. He envisioned it as a personal tribute to his own father, a song he sadly never had the chance to perform. This concept first appeared in Star Trek: Voyager, season 6, episode 24, titled “Life Line.” A planned sequel series, Starfleet Academy, would have revealed what happened to the backup program and allowed The Doctor to attempt a rescue of his “father.” Unfortunately, the show’s cancellation prevented this from happening. Picardo explained in a podcast that Starfleet Academy embodied Gene Roddenberry’s ideals, but didn’t align with current social and political trends.
