Even though it was a controversial part of the Star Wars story, a recent increase in viewers on streaming services shows that people are still enjoying it.
After a seven-year gap, a new Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, is hitting theaters next month. Some fans believe Star Wars peaked with the end of Andor and won’t reach those heights again. However, a lesser-known installment might surprise everyone and show that the franchise still has exciting stories to tell, especially as more people revisit it through streaming.
Originally released and then cancelled in 2024, The Acolyte is a Star Wars show from Disney. Set a century before the events of the Skywalker Saga, the series isn’t perfect, but it offers a unique look at the Jedi Order and how different groups understood the Force, featuring a talented cast. There’s now a possibility the show will be revived.
Okay, so I’ve been checking out what’s trending on Disney+, and as of today, April 24th, The Acolyte is sitting at number 9. It’s just behind Zootopia+ at 8 and Secrets of the Penguins at 7. But the big news is Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord – it’s absolutely dominating at number 1! Globally, Maul is doing even better, landing at number 2, though it’s being beaten by The Testaments, which is a Hulu original, not a straight Disney+ show.
In The Acolyte, Amandla Stenberg (known from The Hunger Games and The Hate U Give) plays twins Osha and Mae. They were born into a group of witches on the edges of the galaxy but were separated as children. Osha becomes a Padawan learner under Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae), while Mae is believed to have died. However, when Mae reappears, Osha uncovers secrets about her past and finds herself attracted to a shadowy Sith apprentice.
The new series, The Acolyte, has received mixed reviews. It currently has a 79% rating from critics and a 19% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. While some viewers have criticized the writing – finding the dialogue awkward and the story slow – the show also faced significant negative reactions rooted in racism and prejudice. Despite these issues, many who approached the series with an open mind believe a second season could have addressed its flaws and improved the overall experience.
Ultimately, The Acolyte presents a more understanding view of the Dark Side in Star Wars, especially when contrasted with the Jedi’s strict control over the Force and their own hidden wrongdoings. The show’s ending hints at a future storyline where Darth Plagueis, through his apprentices Osha and Qimir (Manny Jacinto), begins to set the stage for events in later Star Wars stories.
With a new Star Wars show, The Acolyte, now available on Disney+, interest in the entire franchise is bound to increase, potentially boosting viewership for other Star Wars content. It’s somewhat surprising this revival is happening with The Acolyte specifically, but given that Star Wars is at a turning point, exploring its origins could be a way to generate fresh ideas for the future.
All eight episodes of The Acolyte can be streamed on Disney+.
