Star Wars’ First Movie in 7 Years Is Tracking for Its Worst Live-Action Opening Ever

A new Star Wars film is coming to theaters later this month—the first in seven years. However, excitement for the movie seems to be lower than ever, and it’s predicted to have the weakest opening weekend of any Star Wars film to date.

Early estimates suggest The Mandalorian and Grogu could earn over $80 million during the four-day Memorial Day weekend in the US. However, this would be the lowest opening weekend box office total for a Star Wars film since Disney acquired the franchise.

With an $84 million opening weekend, Solo: A Star Wars Story currently holds the record for the lowest box office debut of any Star Wars film released by Disney. Every other Star Wars movie under the Disney banner has earned over $100 million on its opening weekend. For comparison, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opened with $155 million, The Rise of Skywalker with $177 million, The Last Jedi with $220 million, and The Force Awakens with a massive $247 million.

Din Djarin and Grogu Head to the Big Screen

The Mandalorian and Grogu is a movie that continues the story from the Disney+ show, effectively serving as the next chapter instead of a fourth season. Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, and the adorable Grogu joins him for their first big screen adventure. The film will also feature Sigourney Weaver and Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba the Hutt.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is slated to hit theaters on May 22.
