Steve Coogan hints at “new incarnation” of Alan Partridge and “more” of fan-favourite character

Steve Coogan has hinted at a new Alan Partridge project in “the next couple of years”.

Alan Partridge first appeared in 1991 on BBC Radio 4’s On the Hour and has since played many roles – from sports reporter and radio DJ to chat show host, documentary maker, and even someone who fixes lighthouses. It makes you wonder, what’s next for this beloved comedic character?

I caught up with Steve Coogan at the BAFTA TV Awards last night, where he rightfully took home the Best Actor award for his comedy work. He let slip some exciting news – apparently, he’s thinking about bringing Alan Partridge back for another go, a ‘new incarnation‘ as he put it. Sounds promising!

Coogan didn’t reveal many specifics, but mentioned he and his team have some ideas, potentially including more interactions with real people alongside Alan.

Coogan also mentioned wanting to feature Alan’s long-suffering assistant, Lynn Benfield (played by Felicity Montagu), more in the show, noting her popularity with viewers.

During my tour, Lynn only appeared briefly on stage, but even those quick appearances really energized the audience, who seemed eager to see more of her, he said.

“I’d love to work with Felicity a bit more, bring her back into the story.”

Lynn was first introduced in the comedy series I’m Alan Partridge, which chronicled the broadcaster Alan Partridge’s efforts to rebuild his career after being fired by the BBC. The show aired for two seasons, in 1997 and 2002.

Most recently, Coogan appeared in the Netflix thriller Legends. He’s currently filming season four of The White Lotus in the south of France with a star-studded cast including Laura Dern, Heather Graham, Kumail Nanjiani, and Sir Ben Kingsley.

Earlier this year, Steve Coogan discussed his portrayal of Mick McCarthy, the ex-manager of the Republic of Ireland’s national football team, in the movie Saipan in an interview with TopMob.
