Warning! This article contains minor spoilers for Stranger Things: Tales from ’85.
As a huge fan of Stranger Things, I was really glad to see the latest season address something that’s been bugging me for a while – the show’s power levels. It finally feels like Eleven is being recognized for what she is: a full-blown superhero! Throughout the five seasons, it was always clear Eleven was the strongest weapon against Vecna and the Upside Down. The season 5 finale really cemented that, with her going head-to-head with both Vecna and the Mind Flayer. It was awesome to see her truly step into that role.
The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, sometimes portrayed Eleven’s powers in a confusing way. She’d perform incredible feats, like taking down a helicopter or battling Vecna, but then struggle with much simpler tasks just moments later. This inconsistency was frustrating for viewers.
In the fifth season of Stranger Things, Eleven appeared to struggle when trying to lift the silver barriers blocking the gateway to the Upside Down. Also, whenever she used her powers extensively, she would bleed from her nose or eyes and become exhausted right away.
Although Eleven is often seen as the hero of Stranger Things, her abilities weren’t always clearly defined or consistently developed throughout the show. However, the new spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, officially establishes her as a fully realized superhero.
Stranger Things’ Spin-Off Makes Eleven‘s Powers Much Stronger & More Consistent
The animated Stranger Things spin-off, Tales from ’85, depicts Eleven with significantly enhanced and reliable powers. Throughout all ten episodes, she frequently fights new monsters from the Upside Down, often in quick succession, without showing much fatigue. This demonstrates a much steadier and stronger ability than what was seen in the original series.
This version of the character is much more powerful than her original counterpart. She performs feats we rarely saw in the original show, like using her abilities to save herself from falls. She’s also incredibly strong, shown ripping trees from the ground and throwing them at buildings. Beyond that, she weaponizes large rocks and cleverly turns her enemies’ own vine-like appendages against them.
The action scenes featuring Eleven in Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 are noticeably more exciting and fast-paced than what viewers typically saw in the original series. Because she uses her powers so frequently and effectively in this comic, Eleven feels more like a traditional superhero than she ever did in the live-action show.
Eleven Benefits From Stranger Things: Tales from ’85’s Animated Medium
One reason Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 works so well is that it’s animated. Animation makes it much simpler to create and film large-scale action scenes. While animation still has its own challenges with time and money, it doesn’t have the same physical limitations as live-action filming.
Creating Eleven’s powers with practical effects – like using trees and rocks as she does – would require a lot of computer-generated imagery in a live-action show, and that can be difficult to do reliably. That’s why her most impressive displays of power in Stranger Things often happen during big, important scenes, instead of being a regular part of the story, as they are in Tales from ’85.
Because Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 is animated, it isn’t as tied to the established storyline as the main show. While the original series mainly centered on battles with Vecna and his creatures, the animated spin-off features a wider variety of monsters. This creative freedom really allowed Eleven’s character to develop and ultimately portray her as a genuine superhero.
