Subnautica 2 Has Sold Over 4 Million Copies in Five Days of Early Access

It’s only been a week since the early release of Unknown Worlds’ Subnautica 2, and it’s already incredibly popular. The game, a survival and crafting adventure set underwater, reached two million sales in just 12 hours, and has now surpassed four million in five days, according to the developers.

In a recent statement, executive producer Fernando Melo expressed the team’s gratitude for the enthusiastic response to the game from players worldwide. He shared that it’s been amazing to see so many people exploring the new world during Early Access, and that player feedback is crucial to the ongoing development of Subnautica 2. They look forward to continuing to build the game alongside the community.

The game is also available through Game Pass Preview on Xbox Series X/S and PC, meaning even more people may be playing. On Steam, Subnautica 2 has already reached a much higher peak of concurrent players compared to the first game, with 467,582 players at its peak. Even though that number has decreased, it still recently peaked at an impressive 141,718 players in a single day.

The main drawback for players is that the game is launching in early access for a significant amount of time. The developers estimate it will take at least two years before the full version (1.0) is released, but that timeline is subject to change. They recently addressed player feedback and are working on fixes, such as making it easier to defeat the aggressive fish in the game’s oceans.

We’re not planning to add weapons right away, but we’re focused on making creatures behave better and giving players more ways to defend themselves, so encounters are less frustrating. We’ll share how this work fits into our future plans when we can, so keep an eye out for updates. You can also read our thoughts on the current early access version.
