Tangled Live-Action Remake Officially Sets First Original Role

Disney’s live-action remake of just got a major casting update!

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Diego Luna is joining the cast in a newly created role. Filming is scheduled to begin in Spain in June. Luna will appear alongside Teagan Croft, who is playing Rapunzel – the princess with magical hair who’s been locked away in a tower – and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, the charming rogue who helps Rapunzel escape.

Kathryn Hahn will star as Mother Gothel, the villain who kept Rapunzel captive. Gothel gained eternal youth from a magical golden flower, and that flower’s power was accidentally transferred to Rapunzel’s hair.

It’s still not entirely clear what Luna’s role will be, but he’s expected to sing in the upcoming live-action film, which will feature significant musical numbers – similar to the original animated version. This is especially likely given that Michael Gracey, the director known for The Greatest Showman and Better Man, is directing. Although this could be Luna’s first time in a musical, he’s already well-known to Disney fans as the lead in the Disney+ Star Wars series, Andor. That role was a big success for Luna, earning him nominations for prestigious awards like the Emmy, Golden Globe, and Critics Choice Award.

The upcoming film Tangled is bringing together a team with strong Disney roots. Kristin Burr, who produced the live-action Cruella (2021) and a Freaky Friday sequel for Disney, will produce through her Burr! Productions company. She’s joined by writers Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor, who are collaborating on the script.

The news about who’s been cast in the film is exciting, but the live-action Tangled remake almost didn’t happen. After Snow White didn’t do well in theaters early in 2025, Disney considered putting the project—and other live-action remakes—on hold. However, the success of Lilo & Stitch a couple of months later changed their minds, and they decided to move forward with Tangled again.

The animated movie, first released in November 2011, was a major hit, earning over $591 million at the box office. Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, and Donna Murphy provided the original voices for Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, and Mother Gothel. The story continued with the short film Tangled Ever After in 2012, and later as a popular series on the Disney Channel called Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.
