Taylor Sheridan’s Western shows are becoming increasingly popular. While his Yellowstone universe expands with series like Landman and Tulsa King, it’s clear he’s starting to move away from the themes and settings that initially made him famous on television.

As a big fan of Westerns, I’ve been noticing something interesting with Taylor Sheridan lately. Looking at what he’s releasing in 2026, it’s clear he’s really doubling down on the genre! He’s got six different Western shows coming out this year, and three of them are even set in the same state. What’s really thrown me, though, is that it isn’t Montana – you’d think he’d stick with the setting that made Yellowstone so huge!

Taylor Sheridan’s new shows, including Landman, Dutton Ranch, and Frisco King, are all filmed in Texas, where he was raised and now lives. It seems likely that most of his future television projects will take place in the Lone Star State, even if they aren’t directly related to Yellowstone.

Texas Is Now At The Center Of Taylor Sheridan’s TV Universe

Taylor Sheridan began his television career with a role on Walker, Texas Ranger in the mid-1990s, so his current work feels like a return to his roots. His recent series, Landman, was the first indication that he planned to set more of his Western-style shows in the southern United States.

Billy Bob Thornton’s drama about the Texas oilfields is joined by a sequel to Yellowstone called Dutton Ranch, following Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler as they relocate to a ranch in Texas. Additionally, Samuel L. Jackson’s Tulsa King is getting a spinoff, Frisco King, named after the city near Dallas where the story takes place.

Even though Taylor Sheridan’s other new TV shows this year, Marshals and The Madison, are set in Montana, they were also filmed partly in Texas. Sheridan consistently features Texas prominently in all of his Western-themed shows, making it a central location for his expanding television world.

Samuel L. Jackson’s Tulsa King Spinoff Has Moved To Texas From New Orleans

Samuel L. Jackson’s new series, originally titled NOLA King and set in New Orleans, has been retitled Frisco King. This change happened because Taylor Sheridan decided to move the show’s location to Texas.

Currently, the TV series Frisco King is being filmed around Dallas and Fort Worth, a location that’s particularly convenient for director Taylor Sheridan. This move highlights a growing trend: Texas is quickly becoming a frequent setting in Sheridan’s television projects.

Taylor Sheridan has stepped back from day-to-day production on shows like Tulsa King in Oklahoma and Mayor of Kingstown in Michigan. While his name appears as an executive producer on Marshals, he isn’t actively involved in its production. Currently, The Madison is the only television series he’s personally working on that isn’t set in Texas.

Taylor Sheridan And His Production Company Are Based In Texas

It makes sense that Taylor Sheridan’s shows are being made more and more in Texas, especially around Fort Worth. That’s where his modern production facility, SGS Studios, is located, and it’s close to where he lives in Weatherford. SGS Studios is currently the biggest studio in Texas and a source of local pride for Sheridan.

Sheridan’s vision for featuring Texas in his television shows started long before the studio was built. Ever since he bought the historic 6666 ranch in 2021, it was clear his shows would showcase more of the state.

Taylor Sheridan’s recent work has significantly helped the film and television industry in the state. He’s also successfully reminded audiences that Texas is just as iconic a backdrop for Westerns as places like the Rocky Mountains, the Great Plains, and Yellowstone National Park.
