The Amazing Digital Circus Fans Protest Theatrical Release, With Creator Releasing Official Statement

Fathom Events regularly hosts special movie events for fans of popular shows and films, including bringing live events and older favorites to theaters, and showcasing beloved series. Recently, the finale of The Amazing Digital Circus was expected to premiere online later this year. However, to everyone’s surprise, it was announced that the finale would also be shown in theaters starting June 4th, with a longer-than-usual run. This theatrical release has upset many fans, and the show’s creator has had to address the community’s concerns.

Following the announcement that the finale of The Amazing Digital Circus would be shown in movie theaters, Fathom Events has experienced significant ticket pre-sales. In just four days, the event has generated over $5 million in pre-sale revenue. However, those hoping to see it in theaters on the same day it’s released online may be disappointed, as the theatrical event will happen two weeks before the online release. Fans have been vocal about this release plan online, and the series creator, Kevin Lerdwichagul, has since issued an official statement.

The Digital Circus’s Theatrical Debut

Lerdwichagul explained that the decision to release the finale in theaters was about more than just their project—they hoped to fundamentally change how the animation industry views independent work. They believe that successfully bringing a YouTube-created animated series to thousands of theaters worldwide would open doors for many other creators and original stories. Lerdwichagul admitted it hadn’t been easy, describing the journey to this point as a significant challenge.

The CEO of Glitch Productions explained the decision to wait two weeks before releasing the film digitally. Initially, theaters wanted a full month-long exclusivity window, but the CEO negotiated to get it down to two weeks, which was still considered unusual by theater owners. While acknowledging the wait isn’t perfect and understanding viewers’ frustration, the CEO believes this approach could be a turning point for Glitch Productions and other independent filmmakers if it proves successful.

The final episode of The Digital Circus will deal with the aftermath of Caine’s disappearance and the circus being shut down, forcing the characters to confront their past traumas. They’ll learn the truth about the Digital Circus itself and its origins, and must decide whether to accept it or choose another path. Despite the potentially heavy themes, the creators hint there will still be moments of humor. The series has already gained a huge and dedicated following, with the pilot episode alone reaching over 425 million views.
