The Avatar 4 decision….
Avatar 3, officially titled ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, has finished its run in theaters, earning $1.485 billion. This is considerably less than the $2.3 billion made by the second film and half of the original’s $2.923 billion. There’s been a lot of discussion about whether a fourth Avatar movie would happen, but it seems a decision has now been made.
Director James Cameron recently stated at the Saturn Awards that the chances of making the planned fourth and fifth “Avatar” movies are high, even though Disney, which is funding the projects, hasn’t officially confirmed them. Cameron has consistently said he wants to make both the fourth and fifth films together, or not at all. However, with Disney now under new leadership with CEO Josh D’Amaro, the future of these films remains uncertain.
But into the mix is producer Rae Sanchini who has spoken about the Avatar 4 decision saying,
We’re currently developing the plan, including the budget and timeline, and setting up the process for delivering this. We’re moving forward with everything as quickly as possible.
But also affecting the Avatar 4 decision…
The key to making these films financially viable is controlling costs. They are incredibly expensive to produce – the third film cost $400 million alone. Reducing production expenses is crucial, and advancements in technology over the last 15 years have made that more achievable.
The films are currently scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031, but Sanchini has indicated these dates are subject to change. Cameron filmed some scenes for the fourth movie while working on Avatar 3, though the extent of that footage isn’t clear.
