The new series, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, is a continuation of The Big Bang Theory and marks the third spinoff from the popular show. Unlike Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, which explore the past, this series is set in the present day. While the main characters from The Big Bang Theory won’t be the focus, the show will feature returning characters like Stuart, Denise, Bert, and Barry Kripke. This new series is being created by the same team behind The Big Bang Theory, Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady.
Using flashbacks has worked well to grow The Big Bang Theory, but Stuart Fails to Save the Universe—which focuses on characters from the original series—is especially appealing to longtime fans, and could even bring back some familiar faces from Pasadena. While the sequel wouldn’t have been possible without The Big Bang Theory, one weakness of the original show has become a major issue for the spinoff: it didn’t build strong relationships between the main characters of the new series.
In The Big Bang Theory, Stuart and Denise feel like they exist in a different world from Bert and Kripke. The only reason they interact is because of their connection to Sheldon and his friends. Stuart and Denise represent the fun, hobby side of the show – they’re all about comic books and geek culture. Bert and Kripke, on the other hand, are connected to the more serious, work-related side, since they both work at Caltech. It’s hard to picture them all hanging out together without Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj bringing them together – they wouldn’t even be in the same place, let alone go on an adventure to different universes.
How Stuart Fails To Save The Universe Can Fix Its The Big Bang Theory-Created Problem

Because Stuart Fails to Save the Universe takes place in alternate realities, the show isn’t strictly bound by the rules of the original series. Exploring these different realities is actually one of the most fun parts of the show. However, it’s important to build the main four characters using what we already know from the original timeline, since that’s where the story begins. There is a way to do this effectively, but it requires careful planning.
The story really starts with Sheldon trying to prove he could make new friends, so he invited Barry and Stuart to hang out. This shared experience could be why Stuart reaches out to Sheldon instead of the others. Because both Barry and Stuart work at Caltech, it would be easy for Sheldon to involve the geologist in whatever Stuart’s planning – maybe just a quick run-in. Since the show, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, is a comedy, this could lead to some funny situations, but the writers will need to handle it well to make sure the show is a hit.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will stream on HBO Max this July.
