For generations, the Looney Tunes have been beloved characters, and “The Day the Earth Blew Up” stars Daffy Duck and Porky Pig. The film shows us flashbacks of them as babies, growing up on a farm with their caretaker, Farmer Jim, who kept them out of trouble. Now grown up, and after Farmer Jim’s passing, Daffy and Porky live in the farmhouse he left to them.
The duo missed a huge hole in the roof, caused by an asteroid, and the strange, glowing substance leaking from it. This goo ends up in a popular bubble gum, turning people into zombies.
A slightly unhinged character believes an alien invasion is happening and convinces Porky Pig to help save the world, teaming up with his new crush, the somewhat nerdy Petunia Pig. The three of them face off against the supposed threat, but a surprising twist in the story reveals things aren’t what they initially seemed.
True to the spirit of Looney Tunes, this movie is a fast-paced, energetic 90 minutes – there’s never a slow moment! The script was written by a large team of ten writers, including five who’ve worked on the Spongebob Squarepants films, which is a good sign. It’s packed with jokes, playful breaks where characters acknowledge the audience, and a hilarious sequence of the main characters quickly losing job after job. While some fans might wish Bugs Bunny or other classic characters appeared, ‘The Day the Earth Blew Up’ is a genuinely fun watch – and a title Donald Trump might just try to take credit for preventing!
