Stranger Things was a huge hit for Netflix, becoming their first major franchise and launching a very productive creative relationship with The Duffer Brothers. Netflix seems to have found a winning team in The Duffer Brothers, who consistently deliver content audiences enjoy. While they’ve signed a deal with Paramount for future projects, they’re still heavily involved with Netflix, having recently released the horror series ‘Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen’ and now a trailer for their new sci-fi project.
Last month, a short preview of The Boroughs was released, and now Netflix has shared the full trailer. The series is executive produced by the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, and created by the team behind The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Many viewers immediately noticed similarities between the show and the 1985 film Cocoon, comparing it to “Stranger Things, but with older characters.” The new trailer only reinforces that comparison.
New The Boroughs Trailer Goes Heavy on Stranger Things Similarities
The new series, The Boroughs, is set in a seemingly perfect retirement community in the New Mexico desert. When Sam Cooper (Alfred Molina) moves in, he’s initially wary of his neighbors. But a strange event soon forces him and the other residents to investigate a monstrous threat lurking within their peaceful neighborhood. Fans have already noticed similarities between The Boroughs and the hit show Stranger Things, and the recently released trailer only strengthens those comparisons.
I stumbled across some hilarious reactions online after seeing the trailer, and they perfectly capture the vibe of this movie. One commenter brilliantly described the cast as ‘Stranger Things with a gang of AARP members,’ and honestly, that’s spot-on! Another simply declared it ‘Elderly Stranger Things,’ and you know what? I’m totally on board with that concept. It’s a fun, intriguing premise with a fantastic group of seasoned actors.
After getting a glimpse of one of the massive creatures featured in The Boroughs, a fan joked that it explained the lack of monsters in the alternate dimension from Stranger Things.
Honestly, there’s no evidence suggesting that The Boroughs is connected to Stranger Things in any significant way. However, because the Duffer Brothers – who created Stranger Things – are also executive producers on The Boroughs, and it shares a similar adventurous feel and includes otherworldly creatures, it’s understandable why people are making comparisons. The recent mystery surrounding a supposedly missing Stranger Things episode may have fueled speculation about a secret spinoff. But if Netflix were planning a spinoff, they’d be promoting it heavily, not keeping it a secret.
The plot of the new series is promising, but the cast is a major draw, even without knowing the storyline. Featuring Alfred Molina, the series also stars well-known actors like Bill Pullman (known for Twister and Independence Day), Geena Davis (Beetlejuice, The Last Kiss Goodnight), Clarke Peters (The Wire), Denis O’Hare (True Blood, American Horror Story), and Jena Malone (Sucker Punch, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire). You’ll also see appearances from iconic stars like Ed Begley Jr. (Young Sheldon), Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle), Eric Edelstein (Shameless), and Dee Wallace (E.T.). The series premieres on Netflix on May 21st.
