The Eternals were first imagined by Jack Kirby in 1976, drawing inspiration from a 1940 story he co-created with Martin A. Bursten. These beings are essentially a more evolved branch of humanity, created a million years ago by powerful cosmic entities called the Celestials. Their original purpose was to secretly watch over and protect humankind. The Celestials also created the Deviants, and while the Eternals generally stayed hidden and avoided interfering, they occasionally had to fight to defend humanity – and they were always reborn after being defeated. Following two internal conflicts, the remaining Eternals on Earth decided to actively help people and even teamed up with the gods of Olympus.
Recently, the Eternals experienced a period of conflict and madness, leading to many deaths. However, as they always do, they were eventually resurrected and appear to be returning to a state of peace. This is significant because the original ten Eternals are among the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe.
10) Domo

Domo first appeared in The Eternals #5 in 1976, created by Jack Kirby. He served as the chief administrator of Olympia, offering advice to the Eternals and their leader, Zuras, and carrying out their orders. His role was primarily logistical and bureaucratic, not focused on fighting. Though an Eternal himself, Domo almost never uses his powers, preferring to focus on his administrative work, so his full abilities are rarely seen in battle. While potentially powerful among the Eternals, he seldom uses those powers when fighting.
9) Kingo Sunen

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Kingo Sunen! He first showed up back in 1977 in The Eternals comic series, created by Jack Kirby. What’s really cool about him is that he’s a Japanese Eternal who grew up near Hokkaido and became a master swordsman way back in 16th-century Japan. He’s unique because, unlike many of the Eternals, he actually became a famous actor and director, making samurai films! But don’t worry, he still jumps in to help when the Eternals need to fight big cosmic baddies. He’s got all the usual Eternal powers, but his real specialty is that incredible samurai skill. And his sword? Forget about it – it was made by the Eternal Phastos, so it can slice through practically anything!
8) Sprite

Sprite first appeared in 1977 as a male Eternal, created by Jack Kirby. He was unique because he was eternally trapped in the body of an 11-year-old, never aging. Known as the most playful and troublesome of the Eternals, Sprite often misbehaved when bored. However, his attempt to wipe the memories of his fellow Eternals and gain the ability to grow up led to his execution. Later, Sprite was reborn as a female and came under the care of Ikaris. Sprite possesses the ability to manipulate cosmic energy, projecting it as heat or force, levitating objects and people, and creating incredibly realistic illusions that can fool all five senses. While Sprite’s illusions are exceptionally powerful, their overall energy levels are relatively low.
7) Zuras

Zuras first appeared in The Eternals #5 in 1976, created by Jack Kirby. As a Prime Eternal, he was the powerful leader of Earth’s Eternals, governing from the secret city of Olympia. The son of Kronos, he was selected over his brother A’Lars (who would become Thanos’s father) to lead the first Uni-Mind. Zuras was the most skilled Eternal of his time at channeling cosmic energy, able to unleash powerful blasts of energy from his eyes and hands. He also possessed telepathy, could create illusions, teleport short distances, and fly at around 850 mph. Being the Prime Eternal, he uniquely had the ability to start the Uni-Mind – a combined consciousness that has protected Earth. Despite his power, Zuras was eventually made mortal and died, and even when alive, he needed the help of other Eternals to fully activate the Uni-Mind.
6) Karkas

Karkas is surprisingly a Deviant – traditionally enemies of the Eternals – but he rejected conflict and was welcomed into their group, becoming a loyal ally. First appearing in The Eternals #8 in 1977, created by Jack Kirby, Karkas was born in Deviant Lemuria and even considered frightening by other Deviants. He was enslaved and forced to fight as a gladiator, once battling Ransak while being watched by the Eternal Thena. During an attack by Eson the Searcher, Karkas pleaded with Thena for help, and she transported both him and Ransak to Olympia, marking the start of his life with the Eternals. Karkas is incredibly strong – able to lift around 25 tons – and heals twice as quickly as a normal human, making him a durable and reliable fighter for the team.
5) Makkari

Makkari first appeared in the comic book The Eternals in 1976, created by Jack Kirby. Later, it was revealed that he was actually the Golden Age hero Mercury, who debuted in Red Raven Comics back in 1940. Makkari sacrificed much of his power to focus almost entirely on speed, making him the fastest of the Eternals. He possesses incredible strength and reflexes, allowing him to run on walls and water, and even create cyclones by running in circles. He was once able to travel faster than light, but this was always risky. Recently, Makkari has been reimagined as a female character and remains one of the fastest characters in the Marvel Universe.
4) Ajak

Ajak first appeared in The Eternals #2 in 1976, created by Jack Kirby, alongside the Celestial being Arishem the Judge. Ajak serves as the Eternals’ primary contact with the Celestials, possessing a cosmic connection that allows for direct telepathic communication with these powerful beings, including Arishem. While Ajak has standard Eternal abilities, she specializes in manipulating bio-energy, enabling her to heal, create protective shields, and even change matter at a molecular level. Her role as the Celestials’ chosen communicator makes Ajak incredibly important, granting her significant power and cosmic relevance. Recently, Ajak was brought back to life as a woman and continues to be a key, powerful member of the Eternals.
3) Thena

Thena first appeared in the comic book The Eternals #5 in 1976, created by Jack Kirby. Later stories revealed she was actually the reincarnation of Minerva, an Eternal from the 1940s. Originally named Azura, she was the daughter of the Prime Eternal, Zuras. Her name was changed to Thena by royal order to honor Athena and create peace between the Eternals and the Olympian gods. Thena possesses incredible powers, including virtual invulnerability and immortality, as well as superhuman strength, speed, and agility. She can also release cosmic energy from her eyes or hands as beams of heat, light, or powerful force. Before Ikaris took on the role, Thena was actually the Prime Eternal.
2) Sersi

As a huge comic book and movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Sersi. She first appeared back in 1976 in The Eternals #3, created by Jack Kirby, and I think she’s become the most well-known Eternal, especially after joining the Avengers. What really sets her apart is her incredible ability to change matter – she’s the only Eternal to reach the highest level of mastery in it. Basically, she can turn almost anything non-living into something else entirely, though she can’t create a truly thinking, independent being from scratch. Reaching that fifth level of skill makes her more powerful than all the other Eternals on Earth, with only one exception.
1) Ikaris

Ikaris first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1976, in The Eternals #1, and was created by Jack Kirby. After the death of Zuras, and with Thena’s support, he often took on the role of Prime Eternal, giving him the power to activate the Uni-Mind. Ikaris is incredibly powerful and virtually immortal, thanks to cosmic energy, which also makes him immune to injury, disease, and aging, and allows him to completely control his body. He can unleash powerful energy beams that have harmed even incredibly strong beings like Red Hulk, Hercules, and Thanos. Because he possesses a full range of Eternal abilities alongside impressive feats like fighting Thanos, Ikaris is considered the strongest Eternal character Marvel has ever created.
