Clint Eastwood boasts an impressive filmography of 73 acting and directing credits, earning him four Oscars. After directing what appears to be his final movie, ‘Juror #2’ in 2024, the 96-year-old has seemingly earned his retirement. But many are surprised to learn about the famous roles he actually turned down.

Clint Eastwood first became famous for his roles in Sergio Leone’s westerns, playing a somewhat heroic, nameless character. Ten years later, he was offered the part of Superman, but understandably turned it down. He’d already established himself as a rule-breaking cop in the early Dirty Harry films, and didn’t feel the Superman role would fit. Later, in 1990, Warren Beatty considered him for the lead in Dick Tracy, but again, Eastwood declined. His iconic role as Dirty Harry was simply too different from the traditional comic book hero.

Clint Eastwood understands superheroes better than most comic book creators, in my opinion. His character, Dirty Harry, is an exaggeration of reality – his actions would definitely be illegal. However, that’s not the point. Despite his anger and rough language, Dirty Harry consistently acts with strong morals, essentially delivering justice to murderers that society often overlooks.

During the planning stages for Christopher Nolan’s ‘Batman Beyond,’ Clint Eastwood was considered for the role of an older, retired Bruce Wayne. Sadly, this compelling concept didn’t end up being used in the final film.
