As a huge fan of the Monsterverse, I was really satisfied with how Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters wrapped up, bringing everything back to Skull Island. It all started with the chaos of G-Day, when Godzilla destroyed San Francisco and everyone found out about the Titans. That’s what kicked off Season 1, as Hiroshi Randa’s kids started uncovering their family’s secrets. Then, in Season 2, things got intense with Cate trapped in this strange place called the Axis Mundi. The rescue mission went horribly wrong, and suddenly we had a brand new Titan – Titan X, also known as Co’cai – unleashed on the world. It was a wild ride!
The second season ends by circling back to where it began. Co’cai, a massive Titan, initially escaped Skull Island to avoid a fight with Kong. However, she’s now been driven back after agents working for Isabel Simmons and Kentaro Randa stole her egg. So, after a quick introduction hinting at an epic battle between Godzilla and Titan X, the finale actually revisits the fight the season skipped over – Kong versus Co’cai. But the outcome is surprisingly different than expected.
Why Kong and Co’cai Go Head to Head

The Monsterverse is starting to establish a clear pattern. Skull Island acts as the main hub for a network of portals, like a central station. Kong protects Skull Island, keeping the balance of nature and controlling any Titans that cause trouble. Godzilla does the same thing, but on a worldwide level. When Co’cai unexpectedly left Skull Island, Godzilla took responsibility for her. Now that she’s returned, it’s Kong’s job to manage her.
Isabel Simmons wants to make a lot of money from the Axis Mundi, but Kong is a problem for her. She’s found a way to use May’s inventions as weapons against the Titans. May discovered how to connect to a Titan’s nervous system, and Isabel is now using that technology to enrage Co’cai. Isabel believes an angry mother protecting her egg will be powerful enough to defeat Kong, leading to an epic battle. This fight happens during a dangerous situation, with Cate Randa caught in the middle and Keiko racing to save her.
Humans Are the True Villains of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

Isabel’s scheme is disturbingly similar to one Lee Shaw attempted: forcing a fight to the death between Titanus X and Godzilla. While Lee believed he was acting for the greater good – convinced the rogue Titan was too dangerous – Isabel’s reasons are much more selfish; she simply sees Kong as an obstacle. She doesn’t consider the damage her plan will cause to the entire Titan world, even though Kong is essential to Skull Island’s balance. Ultimately, both Lee and Isabel arrived at the same idea: only a Titan can defeat another Titan.
Season 2 of Monarch establishes that Titans aren’t inherently evil, and they’re more than just natural disasters. The team begins to understand that Titans can actually communicate. This season reveals that the true antagonists aren’t the Titans themselves, but certain humans whose selfish desires lead them to disregard the potential consequences of their actions. Driven by greed and misguided beliefs, characters like Isabel and Kentaro are willing to risk global destruction to achieve their goals. Ultimately, Monarch suggests that when it comes to living alongside Titans, the biggest obstacle is human nature.
Kong Versus Co’cai Ends in a Stalemate

The battle between the Kaiju suddenly stops when Co’cai spots her egg. Her strong maternal instincts take over, breaking free from the mind control and destroying the stolen technology. She becomes completely focused on getting her egg back. Once she has it, she respectfully bows to Kong, who seems to understand and lets her go. Isabel’s plan fails, and most of her team are captured, but she and Kentaro manage to escape and continue pursuing their goals somewhere else.
The Monarch scientists used recordings of Titanus Kong’s calls to guide him back to the dimensional rift near Skull Island, allowing him to return to the Apex cave system. He shares a touching moment with Ilene Andrews, highlighting the potential for peaceful coexistence between humans and Titans, provided people overcome selfishness. This scene intentionally echoes Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam, further emphasizing the god-like status of the Titans in relation to humanity – a fitting conclusion, considering Kong was once worshipped as a deity in various cultures.
Monarch Season 2 Sets Up a Third Season

The second season of Monarch jumps forward in time six weeks, showing what happened after Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Isabel and Kentaro are now working on a new plan, sparked by the appearance of Rodan, but Lee Shaw is trying to stop them. Each season of Monarch typically centers on one Titan, with others playing supporting roles – Godzilla was the focus of Season 1, and Co’cai drove the plot of Season 2. So, it’s likely that Season 3 will be primarily about Rodan.
Tim is now leading a new Monarch team – Keiko, Cate, and May – who are being called “Monarch 2.0.” They’re continuing Monarch’s original mission of discovering and defending, but they’re also the best hope for bringing Kentaro home. The upcoming third season of Monarch is shaping up to be a very emotional story, and it seems Isabel and Kentaro are willing to take extreme measures to get what they want.
