The Most Popular Demon Slayer Characters

Over the past seven years, the series has gained many new fans who have come to love its diverse characters. As the anime nears its end, all the main characters have now been revealed. Some have captured hearts through brave actions and selflessness, while others have won fans over simply with their charming personalities and kindness.

Most shows with as many characters as Demon Slayer usually have at least a few that fans dislike, but even characters like Zenitsu – who can be frustrating – have likable qualities. Surprisingly, even some of the demons from Demon Slayer gain fans after viewers learn about the difficult lives they experienced before becoming demons.

Akaza’s Backstory Made It Impossible Not to Admire Him After Death

Despite being the villain who defeated the beloved Kyojuro Rengoku, fans of Demon Slayer found themselves strangely impressed by Akaza’s fighting spirit. This has made him a popular character, though currently he ranks around #20. As Upper Moon 3, Akaza constantly trains and fights to stay at the top of the demon hierarchy.

Akaza’s complex character is captivating – he shows respect for Kyojuro even as he fights him, and then develops a fierce rivalry with Tanjiro that keeps viewers engaged. Following the revelations in The Infinity Castle: Part 1, he appears more relatable and less purely villainous than characters like Gyokko and Doma.

Genya Shinazugawa Gradually Softens His Heart over Time

Genya Shinazugawa is the younger brother of Sanemi, a powerful demon slayer known as the Wind Hashira, but Genya is even more quick-tempered and aggressive. While Genya is very strong, he still needs a lot of training to become as skilled as a Hashira. He and Tanjiro clash early in their training because Genya prefers to work alone, which doesn’t mesh well with Tanjiro’s collaborative approach.

Genya becomes more likable as the story unfolds, and we understand his quick reactions better once we learn about his difficult past. The recent season of Demon Slayer gave Genya a lot of focus, which explains why he’s become a fan favorite. However, his sometimes harsh personality can be a bit off-putting.

Sabito Left an Impression with Minimal Screentime

Sabito is a relatively minor character in Demon Slayer who has unexpectedly become very popular, even more so than some of the main characters. He trained under Sakonji Urokodaki, but didn’t have the natural ruthlessness needed to become a Demon Slayer. Despite this, Sabito served as a tough but effective teacher for Tanjiro, and fans have grown to love him for it.

Sabito tragically died during a battle with a demon. He hesitated when he had a chance to deliver the final blow, and that hesitation proved fatal. His brave sacrifice deeply impacted fans and motivated Tanjiro to become stronger. Sabito’s final words especially inspired Tanjiro to push himself further and achieve his goals.

Gyomei Himejima Is Cynical but Gives Tanjiro Another Chance

I remember when all we knew about Gyomei Himejima from Demon Slayer was what he looked like and that he was one of the Hashira. It wasn’t until the Hashira Training arc that we learned his incredibly sad backstory, and honestly, it made you feel for him so much. Apparently, before becoming a swordsman, he ran an orphanage, but a terrible betrayal by one of the children led to tragedy.

Gyomei became distrustful of people after witnessing their cruelty, leading him to be quite cynical. However, Tanjiro Kamado restored his faith when Gyomei learned Tanjiro was willing to sacrifice Nezuko to keep his promise to protect the Swordsmith Village. Gyomei also taught Genya a crucial technique that later enabled Tanjiro to move a massive boulder one cho away.

Sanemi Shinazugawa’s Complicated Past Makes Him Appealing

Sanemi Shinazugawa is a well-known Demon Slayer who truly shines during the Swordsmith Village Arc. Like other Hashira, he strongly dislikes demons. As the Wind Hashira, Sanemi plays a key role in helping Tanjiro improve. However, some fans were initially put off by his harsh treatment of his brother, Genya.

Ultimately, Sanemi revealed he simply wanted Genya to be happy and safe, and he acknowledged his own shortcomings as an older brother. Though he’s a striking figure now, fans are especially drawn to his difficult history – a past filled with sacrifices made to protect his siblings from demons. He’s faced real tragedy, but it hasn’t made him bitter.

Shinobu Kocho Has Two Extremely Opposite Personalities

Shinobu Kocho is a standout female demon slayer known for her cheerful and relaxed personality, which often makes people underestimate her. She enjoys playfully teasing others, particularly Giyu, who struggles to respond to her witty remarks. However, like all skilled demon slayers, Shinobu becomes serious and focused the moment a demon appears, quickly dropping her playful demeanor.

Shinobu doesn’t just defeat demons; she actively enjoys tormenting them before she finishes them off. This intense hatred stems from the pain her sister, Kanae, suffered at the hands of Doma, a powerful demon. Meeting Nezuko, however, begins to change Shinobu’s perspective, allowing her to feel a bit more empathy. While her past trauma understandably fuels her strong reaction to all demons, it prevents her from ranking higher on this list.

Obanai Iguro’s Tough Exterior Is Essentially a Facade

Obanai Iguro wasn’t known for being warm to Tanjiro Kamado’s group, but he wasn’t a bully either. As the Serpent Hashira, he was strict but just, pushing Tanjiro hard during training for the final battle to help him master a unique breathing technique inspired by snakes. While Obanai never became close to Tanjiro, he did contribute to his growth as a swordsman.

Obanai generally doesn’t seem to think highly of others, but he genuinely enjoyed practicing with his fellow Hashira, Sanemi and Muichiro. Surprisingly, he’s also good friends with Mitsuri Kanroji, and he even gives her small gifts like socks. They’re an unlikely pair, but fans of Demon Slayer are happy to see them getting along.

Yoriichi Tsugikuni Is the Strongest Demon Slayer to Exist

Yoriichi Tsugikuni isn’t technically a Demon Slayer in the present, as he died centuries ago. Despite this, he’s become incredibly popular with fans. His backstory shows how he became the strongest demon slayer ever, even more powerful than any of the Hashira or Muzan himself.

Yoriichi pushed the Demon King, Muzan, to the edge of defeat, and though Muzan survived, he was haunted by Yoriichi for the rest of his days. Viewers adore Yoriichi for many things, especially his incredible Sun Breathing style, but mostly because of his modest personality. It’s also important to remember how powerful he was: even at over eighty years old, he defeated and almost killed Kokushibo, the strongest of the Upper Moon demons.

Tengen Uzui’s Need to Protect the Weak Makes Him Lovable

Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira, is a very outgoing character in Demon Slayer. He plays a key role in helping Tanjiro and his friends during the events of Season 2, especially when facing dangerous situations. However, some might find his confident and flamboyant personality a bit over the top at first.

Fans recognize that Tengen Uzui’s strength isn’t about seeking praise, but about pushing himself and others—like Tanjiro—to become stronger. He’s also become popular for how well he treats his wives, Hinatsuru, Suma, and Makio. The loving relationship between Tengen and his partners is one of the most positive and healthy in Demon Slayer.

Kanao Tsuyuri Knows How to Maintain a Formidable Poker Face

Similar to Muichirou, Kanao is very good at hiding her emotions, likely because of the difficult childhood she experienced. However, seeing demons harm people she cares about fills her with intense anger. As time goes on, she starts to disobey orders – as she did with Shinobu – and bravely participates in the Final Selection.

Kanao usually seems quiet and gentle, but she has a fierce, ruthless side that appears during battles with demons. This was especially clear in her fight with Doma, where she had to abandon her calm composure to withstand his harsh words. However, viewers of Demon Slayer really began to connect with Kanao when she started showing her feelings for Tanjiro, as he helped her become more open and expressive.
