Avatar: The Last Airbender is widely considered one of the best animated series of the 2000s. The show, originally aired on Nickelodeon, has captured the hearts of many thanks to its compelling characters, stunning animation, richly developed world, exciting action sequences, emotional depth, and thoughtful themes. Beyond the television series, the story continues in comic books published by Dark Horse Comics, which maintain the same high quality and creatively expand the existing story, characters, and ideas. A recent comic book series focuses on the Kyoshi Warriors, a group often overlooked in the main narrative.
2026 promises to be a big year for fans of Avatar. We’ll finally see the Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender movie and the second season of the live-action Netflix series. Plus, details are emerging about the next film, Avatar: The Seven Havens. Continuing the franchise’s strong storytelling, Dark Horse’s Avatar: The Last Airbender – Kyoshi Warriors #1 comic introduces us to the heroes of Kyoshi Island as they face challenges beyond their home for the very first time.
The Kyoshi Warriors are Finally Getting the Attention They Deserve

The world of Avatar: The Last Airbender is filled with memorable characters like Aang and Zuko, and has earned a huge fanbase. However, Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors are often overlooked. First introduced in Season 1, Episode 4, “The Warriors of Kyoshi,” this group of skilled, all-female fighters doesn’t rely on bending abilities. Named after and inspired by Avatar Kyoshi, they are dedicated to protecting their home, Kyoshi Island, and initially stay neutral in the Hundred-Year War against the Fire Nation. Suki eventually joins Team Avatar and develops a romantic relationship with Sokka.
The comic Avatar: The Last Airbender – Kyoshi Warriors #1 finally gives Suki and her fellow warriors the spotlight they deserve. While Suki appeared in the show, the other Kyoshi Warriors were mostly nameless faces in the background. This comic introduces us to Rie, Aika, Mira, and Fume as individuals with unique personalities and a strong bond. It also highlights Suki’s important role as a skilled fighter and loyal member of Team Avatar – a role that’s often overlooked. For the first time, we get to explore Suki’s relationships with her fellow warriors and the challenges she faces as their leader.
The Kyoshi Warriors are a powerful reminder of Avatar Kyoshi’s legacy, having built their lives and fighting style around her example. Avatar Kyoshi was known for her strength and for creating Kyoshi Island by separating it from the mainland – an island that Suki and her fellow warriors have faithfully defended for generations. But as revealed in Avatar: The Last Airbender – Kyoshi Warriors #1, this impressive feat came with unforeseen challenges.
The Kyoshi Warriors are Strangers to Their Own Kingdom

The comic series Avatar: The Last Airbender – Kyoshi Warriors explores a previously untold story: how the Kyoshi Warriors left their island home. For years, Kyoshi Island had remained separate from the rest of the Earth Kingdom, choosing to stay out of the Hundred-Year War with the Fire Nation. After Avatar Aang and his friends visited and were attacked, Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors decided to travel to the mainland to help fight. However, they soon discover things aren’t as simple as they thought.
The Kyoshi Warriors’ experience arriving in the Earth Kingdom is surprisingly similar to Aang’s after being frozen for a hundred years. Both groups were met with hostility because they had been away from the war for so long, with some locals blaming them for not preventing it. Despite this, Suki and her warriors manage to connect with a local boy named Bun. However, like Aang, they quickly become overwhelmed by the realities and harshness of the ongoing war and struggle to adjust to a new culture.
Like many characters in the Avatar series, the Kyoshi Warriors grapple with ideas about tradition, loyalty to their country, and the harshness of war. They are compelled to abandon their unique armor and weapons to conform to the Earth Kingdom army’s standards. To make matters worse, Bun, who is inexperienced, is being sent directly into the most dangerous parts of the war, facing almost certain death. As they march to battle, proudly singing the national anthem, the Kyoshi Warriors catch a sobering glimpse of what awaits them: wounded and defeated Earth Kingdom soldiers returning from the front lines, the few who managed to survive. This serves as a powerful illustration of the difference between the idealized vision of war and the brutal reality.
The first issue of Avatar: The Last Airbender – Kyoshi Warriors brilliantly shows how Kyoshi Island’s focus on staying separate has led Suki and her fellow warriors to feel distant from the rest of the Earth Kingdom. While they’re always ready to protect their home, facing the war directly proves to be a much bigger challenge, both in terms of danger and the difficult moral choices they encounter. The warriors experience culture shock, guilt, and are horrified by the realities of war – struggles that Aang also faced. Their connection to Avatar Kyoshi makes these parallels even more meaningful. Seeing Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors navigate this new and challenging world is a compelling story and a great addition to the Avatar universe.
