The Outer Worlds Will Offer Free PS5 Remaster Upgrade Amidst Delistings and Price Drops

Obsidian Entertainment announced its future plans for the original RPG, The Outer Worlds. While the game will be removed from sale on some platforms and see price reductions elsewhere, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 players have nothing to worry about – the game will remain available as usual.

If you have the original version of The Outer Worlds for PlayStation 4 before May 27, 2026, you’ll automatically receive a free upgrade to the Spacer’s Choice Edition on PlayStation 5.

The developer is taking down the original version of the game from most online stores on a specific date, but it will remain available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch – primarily impacting PC players. Owners of the base game on PS4 before that date will be the only ones who see the improvements.

Starting May 27th, we’re also making some prices permanently lower. The Spacer’s Choice Edition for PlayStation 5 will now cost $39.99, a $20 reduction.

With the upcoming release of the Spacer’s Choice Edition as the standard version, Obsidian Entertainment is continuing to improve the game with new patches. The game initially launched on PS5 in 2023 with several issues, and while some updates have been released, it still needs work.

Hey everyone, a new update just dropped! And get this – there’s a bigger one coming in May. They’re promising a bunch of improvements – stuff like better performance, tweaked lighting, and fixes for a ton of quests and gameplay bugs. But the best part? We’re finally getting grenades! I’m so hyped to try those out.

You can find details about this update and what’s coming next in the patch notes on our official forum. If you’re on PlayStation 5, make sure you’re updating to version 2.5.7.0.

The initial announcement for the Spacer’s Choice Edition of The Outer Worlds described it as a significant upgrade, promising sharper graphics, realistic weather, improved lighting and scenery, faster loading times, and more detailed characters. The goal was to deliver a smooth experience at 60 frames per second with 4K resolution, and to take advantage of the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller features.

Players are hoping the game will finally live up to its potential when the next update releases at the end of the month. This update will likely attract a new wave of players, as owners of the original PlayStation 4 version can upgrade for free. Unfortunately, the initial release of the Spacer’s Choice Edition received criticism, causing its Metacritic score to fall by 13 points. The original version had a score of 85, but the Spacer’s Choice Edition launched with a score of just 72.
