Helena Bonham Carter left Season 4 last month, initially reported as due to “creative differences.” Now, after the role was rewritten for Laura Dern, the actual reason for Bonham Carter’s unexpected exit has come to light.
Sources say Helena Bonham Carter was initially cast as a faded actress hoping to revive her career. However, after working on the set for almost a week, she left the project, reportedly because she struggled to deliver the energetic performance that the show’s creator, Mike White, envisioned for the role.
It’s not entirely known why Helena Bonham Carter didn’t want to take on the role as originally planned by Tim Burton, considering she’s often played lively and energetic characters. For example, her portrayal of Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter films was famously boisterous, often displaying a rowdy and energetic personality.
Laura Dern, having collaborated with the creator on previous shows like Enlightened and Year of the Dog, was brought on board quickly. The character is being rewritten specifically for her, but she’ll still be part of the main group and likely play someone striving to regain their former success.
You can watch The White Lotus on HBO Max. While there’s no confirmed date yet, the fourth season is likely to arrive sometime next year.
