Now that the eighth season of the police drama The Rookie is being shown in the UK and is nearing its finale in the US, the show’s fate has been decided.
The show has been officially picked up for a ninth season! This makes it the third-longest-running drama on ABC, following only Grey’s Anatomy and NYPD Blue.
In an interview with Deadline, the show’s creator, Alexi Hawley, hinted that they hope to keep the series going for many seasons, much like the long-running medical drama ‘Grey’s Anatomy’.
Everyone seems to be really enjoying themselves – the cast genuinely likes each other and loves coming to work because they get to do exciting things daily. As we approach season nine, we still have plenty of fresh ideas.
Unlike some crime shows that need a new case each week, we have the freedom to constantly change things up. This really helps us avoid running out of ideas and keeps the story feeling fresh.
Adding new players or characters always shakes things up, so I’ll keep doing it as long as I’m allowed.

In an interview, Hawley hinted at a season 8 finale with an unresolved ending. He also revealed that Monica (Bridget Regan) will play a significant role, along with the task force, and that a storyline introduced earlier in the season will resurface towards the end.
The cast of The Rookie includes Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, Jenna Dewan, Lisseth Chavez, and Deric Augustine.

Everyone is eagerly awaiting news about “The Rookie: North,” a new series currently in development. The pilot episode was filmed earlier this year, and creator Alexi Hawley told Deadline it turned out well, suggesting he’s hopeful it will be picked up for a full season.
He mentioned the network was very pleased with the show. While it’s impossible to predict the future, he’s confident in the cast, especially Jay Ellis, who he praised as a standout performer. Working with everyone was a great experience, and he’s generally hopeful about the possibility of good news soon.
I’m really excited about ‘The Rookie: North’ if it gets made! It’s going to star Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, and he plays a really interesting character – he’s the oldest rookie to ever join the Pierce County Police Department, which adds a whole new dynamic to the show.
The Rookie airs on Sky Witness and NOW in the UK. Find out more about how to sign up for Sky TV.
