Movies based on real-life events often make for compelling stories, and the trailer for “The Testament of Ann Lee” suggests this film will be no exception.

What’s The Testament of Ann Lee trailer about….

Mona Fastvold, the acclaimed director of films like The World to Come and The Brutalist, brings us the remarkable true story of Ann Lee, the woman who founded the Shakers. Amanda Seyfried, nominated for an Academy Award, plays Lee, the energetic leader who advocated for equality between men and women and among all people, earning the devotion of her followers.

The performance piece, The Testament of Ann Lee, vividly portrays the joys and struggles of Ann Lee’s attempt to create a perfect society. It features over a dozen classic Shaker hymns transformed into dynamic dance movements choreographed by Celia Rowlson-Hall (known for her work on Vox Lux) and includes original music and a score composed by Academy Award winner Daniel Blumberg (The Brutalist).

Behind the scenes….

I’m really excited about this project! It’s written by the incredibly talented Fastvold and Brady Corbet, who was even nominated for an Academy Award! The team behind it is fantastic too – Andrew Morrison, Joshua Horsfield, Viktória Petrányi, and they’re joined by Fastvold and Corbet again, plus Gregory Jankilevitsch, Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska, Lillian LaSalle, and Mark Lampert. It’s a seriously impressive group of people!

Some fascinating facts…..

Filmed in Budapest during the summer of 2024, the movie premiered to great acclaim, receiving a 15-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival on September 1, 2025. Interestingly, while composing the music, Daniel Blumberg discovered a small, antique bell from the 1700s in a New York music shop. He incorporated this bell into the film’s score, and it’s a recurring sound throughout the movie.

The film will be in UK cinemas on 20th February 2026.
